So for completeness - now fixed.

I clamped the brake hose, removed the bleed screw completely then with a G clamp pushed the pistons back into the closed position.

At that point if the G clamp was removed they sprang back out. Tried again and this time whist clamped put back the bleed screwed tight. The pistons remained closed , released the hose and then was able to re fit the drum as expected.

So it seems no air in the empty brake cylinder was the answer!

Just a footnote in case anyone else has a similar experience. 2010 XS USW
