Don’t forget that the wading advise back in the 80’s and early 90’s was to open the doors, let the water in, gain traction and drive through.
With the doors still open and back on dry land the water will find its way out. Not just a feature but a clear benefit……and a good reason to take the carpets out and replace with rubber mats.  [/i] |

I can't figure out if there is an unusually large number of stupid people in the area around Rufford Ford or if it simply acts as a magnet for them. The videos featuring the ford are certainly shocking - if they accurately portray modern motoring behaviours then the human race is in more trouble than even I had realised!
Even allowing for the fact that the uneventful runs through the ford don't make for good YouTube viewing, and that many of those who feature are clearly just dim bulbs who think it is clever to show off, the number of people who seem simply to have no clue how to drive through water, or appear not to understand that doing so may possibly be a bad idea, is disturbing.
It does make for entertaining viewing at times, though! 
Another thing which the Rufford Ford videos really make clear is what a remarkably unnecessary and unhelpful invention the electric handbrake was - it's much harder to remove a drowned car from a ford when the handbrake can't be released. |

When I see people going through deep water i wonder if they are aware of the potential consequences. When I see trucks that are prepared I figure they understand the potential for problems when entering the water, but also the additional maintenance with water entering the parts you don't want it. Also the additional rust prevention required beforehand.
I have a 90 and whilst I want to get it ready to be able to enter water of a certain depth, I don't really have any intention to do so unless necessary. Perhaps when i understand my truck more and what I really need to do after wading I will try it - in fact I am looking forward to it. But when i get to that stage I hope I will understand all the parts to take out to reduce the amount of hours cleaning it out afterwards. |

Apologies for the first post and from a non defender owner as I'm curious to know.
if a defender entered a ford / deep water i.e. just below the wing mirror (being the depth of the water). Would water seep through into the interior? As it would annoy me greatly given the dampness and smell attributed from having wet interior and the condensation. Though I could be over thinking it  . |

I once went as deep as having water over the wing tops (300tdi high level intake axle breathers and a tonne of sandbags in the back). All was dry except the heater intake turned the hot air blowing on the windscreen to instant steam, could not a see a thing ! Luckily a dead straight road and for only a few seconds at that depth so the water was not the main problem that time! 2010 XS USW

The last time I had my '07 double cab in water up to the outside door handles for a minute or two the front remained dry but the second row footwell had 3" of water. Be aware the when the vehicle starts to float you'll need to open a door and flood the interior in order to maintain traction.
Water that deep is worth avoiding unless you really know what you're doing. |
