Hi all - quick question...which do you prefer - the rubber or leather rear diff pinion seal? My 1997 defender 110 currently has what looks like a reasonably new rubber seal fitted, but it's already leaking having had a reasonably easy life! does anyone have experience of both types of seal? Which would you recommend and why?

Hi Mr James - I didn't know they made the leather seals for the diffs either until yesterday when I stumbled across one. Part number AEU2515G. Most sites seem to stock them, but Craddocks displays and describes the part very well.

How many miles?
Sounds more like worn input shaft if new seal not doing its job. Cheers James 110 XS Utility 130 Puma Station wagon/camper (in the making) 90 Puma Hardtop |

Hi. Total vehicle mileage is 68K - so not high for a 1997 vehicle. Without pulling it apart I can't see the overall condition of the shaft, but I wouldn't have expected massive wear on the component at this mileage.

Or seal fitted wrong way? Or breather blocked? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Seal is correctly fitted and breathers are fine. I'm thinking that if the vehicle has been stood for a while, then the shaft could have rusted or pitted slightly or the rubber could have become hard due to lack of use - then, as I've started using it regularly then it's started leaking. I'll pull it to bits, give the shaft a clean up and replace the seal and see how it goes. if it still leaks, then I'll look to replace the shaft.

Eventually I replaced it with a rubber seal and so far it seems to have done the job.

Have had a leaky rear diff pinion on my 110 since I got it in 2015 despite a few attempts to remedy it with various rubber and leather seals and giving the flanges a serious clean up. Replaced the flange with a new one and fitted a leather seal around 6-12 months ago which appeared to finally fix it, but noticed in the last few weeks that the diff nose is looking 'damp' again, maybe not the permanent fix I was hoping for.....
Before anyone suggests it the breather is clear with a new pipe ran from the cleaned axle banjo fitting inside the body to gutter level. |

Hi - thanks for your response. I've been working my way around the various bits of leaks etc., and I finally feel like I'm getting somewhere (just the 1 'serious' leak from the transfer box idler shaft!). Once I've finished, then I'll probably need to start all over again - keeping the leaks at bay is like painting the Forth Bridge!

Had a leather type seal in mine, local specialist recommended replacing with a newer rubber type seal, so they fitted the newer type flange and rubber seal, been happy with it so far.
