2004 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Epsom Green
Intermittent Starting Issue
Hey,

So my 110 has developed an intermittent starting issue which appears to be getting worse.

On occasion it will take a good 20 seconds to start, cranks fine then sounds like its trying to fire but cant quite get there. However will start if I put my add throttle, however If I lift it will chug a little then die.

That said hot or cold doesnt seem to matter. Strangest part is it will sometimes start fine, do 40miles on the mway, then I stop for coffee and its hard to start again. Same as above.

Injector seals where done last year, roughly 10k ago. Genuine LR

Starter 3 years ago, Denso
Alternator 2 years ago, Denso.
Battery is charging - 14.4v when running also have split charge. Both batteries charging as they should.
Crank sensor swapped out for a Lucas, still the same.

Fuel filter housing is GORE 4 years old. Filter is 3 months old, Mahle. Correctly purged when installing.

MPG remains the same. Not leaking fuel as far as I can tell.

FPR is around a year old - genuine LR as well.

Fuel pump is getting noisy, however been like this for a while now.

Any other suggestions? Instagram @defender_ventures

Suggest you…1 plug it in and see if there are any codes. 2 check for oil in the ECU plug

Boo! That sucks…. Have you checked the duck valve in the fuel filter head? 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

l had exactly the same issue with our TD5 90

After changing the injector seals, fuel filter housing, battery, FPR, MAF unit, injector harness, and no change

The fault was the STARTER MOTOR

It was working, but producing some sort of voltage spike or interference that was messing up the ECU and causing the intermittent starting issues.

Similar to the above statement. Fitted a Britpart starter motor and then began having horrendous starting problems as with yourself. Replaced the starter motor and bobs your uncle all A-OK once more.

Having said that how bad is the fuel pump? I had a noisy Bearmach pump in Miffy that over time got noisier and then the engine began to do the same as you describe. Turned out the pump was not making the required fuel pressure. I would try and pressure test the pump first. See whether that is behaving. If it is the pump only buy VDO… Thumbs Up

I’d start by changing the pump, if it’s noisy then it’s certainly on its way out and even if it doesn’t fix this issue then it will most likely stop you getting an issue with it further down the road. - not cheap but go for a genuine VDO one and not aftermarket

Does it crank over at a reasonable speed? I.e. a speed that it should start at?

What is the voltage while Cranking? If the voltage is too low the ecu will stop working and you get no fuel injected.
As asked before how is your cranking speed. The grease in the reduction gears can get sticky. I could hardly turn it by hand. I changed it to normal bearing grease and it cranks a lot faster. Roel
