France 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Corris Grey
Transfer Box Swarf
Evening all,

Just completed a full oils/lubes/filters service and whilst doing the transfer box noticed some swarf on the magnet. Very fine, not much, thin layer. Should I be worried? Anything I should do? Everything feels normal.

Have an HD clutch and Ashcroft Output shaft heading this way in the next few weeks.

Thoughts? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Unlikely to be a problem if there are no other problems , it’s just the magnet doing it’s job.
If there were big lumps or the box was noisy or playing up , it might warrant further investigation. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop

Did you measure the amount of oil you drained ? Was it the correct amount that should have been in there ?

No I didn’t. But I’ve not seen any evidence of leakage. I was on post-op sofa duties for six weeks and Def remained in same spot throughout. No drops under the vehicle at all. From any of the key reservoirs: diffs, engine, gearbox, transfer box. What’s more, transfer box was very clean externally. As was the prop. I assume that if the amount of dirty oil was very low, there would be evidence all over the propshaft, and around that area of the chassis? There’s none.

I had an Output shaft failure in 2018. Unfortunately I was abroad and was recovered to a main LR dealer so they refused to fit anything other than LR parts, wouldn’t let me upgrade to HD clutch and Ashcroft shaft replacement. So, maybe it is wear and tear from that….? Monsieur Le Grenadier

On my 3rd change now.

Each time comes out looking like this… *about 25k miles between changes.

I wouldn’t be to worried.

That is one thing you can rule out, since the adaptor shaft occupies the casing between the MT82 and the LT230 so any detritus from the joint can't get into either box.

Sadly if you have had one shaft failure already, you shouldn't assume that it will not happen again. Big Cry

Evidence from owners, especially from the survey carried out on this forum, suggests that vehicles on which the shafts fail suffer recurring failures with standard parts. If you are lucky enough to have one where the shaft doesn't fail rapidly, it seems that they can last a very long time.

The evidence appears to support the suggestion that there is an underlying alignment or tolerance problem which a vehicle either has, or does not have. If you happen to own a vehicle prone to failure, I would strongly suggest that an Ashcroft or LOF coupling is considered. At the very least, the standard one should be lubricated very generously on assembly.

The jury is out on which part introduces the alignment or tolerance error, but my money is on the adaptor shaft housing (which joins the MT82 to the LT230).

Too true Blackwolf. Too true.

The only thing that I assume/presume when it comes to Defenders is:

a. I will love mine forever,
b. The next time it frustrates me is only just around the corner. Whistle

But specifically with regard to the Output Shaft, that’s exactly why I’ve bought an Ashcroft replacement and will get it fitted with a HD clutch fix clutch as soon as they arrive here from the UK. My last failure was in Spain and only a LR dealer was available to fix it. As such, they only allowed OE parts, despite my offering to buy and supply updated parts. I’ll rest more easily, but never complacently, when the replacement has been undertaken. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier
