You've quite possibly blown the fuse but that is likely indicative of the wipers being seized. The wheel boxes are the prime culprits here. You may get away with it by lifting the rubber boots at the base of each spindle and dousing them in penetrating oil (not WD40!) but failing that they may need replacing.
It's worth checking other, simpler stuff first, of course. The fuse as mentioned and then the switch. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Hello m3vert
My symptoms were more or less your symptoms... As LRA says your Wheelboxe/s are probably where this is leading... My Experience... https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic57900-15.html Good Luck... SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Thanks for that information. The fuse was fine and I double checked it. I pulled back the rubber boots at the base and a load of rust fell out. The car has been parked up for the last 11 days. I didn't have any penetrating oil but did have WD40 so I used that and managed to get the wipers working again so thank you very much!! Is it still worth getting some penetrating oil into the area? Is there anything further I can do to clean things up or should I just leave things well alone now? Thanks in advance. |

You could try packing the rubber boots with grease to keep the water out. I suspect that you may be on borrowed time witht he wheel boxes though, unfortunately. Darren

Thanks. I will do that. I am guessing that this is a grim job on the puma? If I do need to take the dash out to do this job, am I as well biting the bullet and go the whole hog for this:

Take a look at the link that SKIP posted above to see the work involved in changing them. Whether that warrants the cost of the parts you've linked to is debatable - if the originals were properly greased and sealed then it's likely that they'd soldier on indefinitely. Darren

Yes I have just read through that thread and think that probably doing the job myself is pushing things a bit! Don't fancy it to be honest. I called Engine 710 who are my local specialist and they have just quoted me £400 to do the job which replaces both wheel boxes and also replaces the wiper motor as well. Decisions decisions!!! They can't do the job until October though and I just hope I can keep them working until then if I go that route.

Lift both wipers off the screen so no resistance. Put them on fast wipe, move the rubber caps out of the way and spray penetrating oil / wd40 or similar down the spindle as they are moving. Leave them on for half an hour or so and keep spraying. Then move onto some engine oil in an oil can and drip it down the spindles. They usually free up and work really well if treated like this - I did an 02 td5 the other day with seized wiper and after half an hour they were better than they had ever been.

Why not try MMP Landrover in Dundee, they seem to come up a lot on the forum with good reviews and recommendations.
I have never used them personally although I have previously asked for quotes for work and they are far cheaper than engine 710 prices, which I think are a bit steep. Might be worth a try. |

This is unlikely but thought I'd mention it in case it helps.
When this happened to me I changed the fuse under the steering wheel which I later realised is for the rear wiper; it took me a while to realise there is a fuse under the seat for the front wipers. |

Did mine 2/52 ago on a TD5.
Sounds like wheel boxes as mine did the same. I used genuine parts £114 for 2 wheel boxes, wire rack and new park switch. Not sure you need motor replacing as i thought mine would be blown but it wasn't so all good. if wheel boxes have seized you should replace even if they are now working. Also. wire rack should be replaced and it is worth replacing park switch as this is dead easy. Good luck Andy btw- after i did this the wipers work so much better |
