Why not fit a Difflock drain plug and solve all your problems? See http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic29173.html for more info and links.

I use one since it avoids the need to remove my underbody protection to drain the oil.

Thanks. Another vote for the difflock femco plug then Smile.
How about oil extractor? - I am only still thinking about it as I could use it for other things too so I might get more bang for buck!
Anyone had any issues with garages and the difflock plugs if you don’t always do your own servicing. I guess they are reasonably common.

I tried to suck out some oil using a pump such as the Pela.
I fitted a thinner hose to fit in the 2.2's tube. But it only sucked a little oil and mostly air.
I realised the hose wasn't in deep enough. There is a resistance (which you can also feel with the dipstick) and I didn't dare to force it down the last 10cm, fearing it may tear apart Embarassed
Did you just push it in with force?

Sorry if this point has been made before but the Pela draws the oil up much better if the engine oil is hot. Not quite such an issue in the summer but certainly for the other 11 months of the year.

Ref filter making a mess, try using hand around a plastic bag that's up around the filter. Catch oil and filter in the bag. Mind oil temp! Cheers
