Oil change with extractor
Has anyone used an oil extractor on a puma?

I’am looking at the pela 6000. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Whats wrong with undoing the sump plug? You've got to go under to do the filter anyway... Question

I couldn't get mine to work. The pipe, when threaded through the dipstick hole hit either the higher part of the sump, or some sort of baffle in the sump. So it was sump plug out and the usual game of oil running down my arm and all over the anti roll bar or steering drag link (which ever is in the firing line, I can't remember).

I look forward to the same experience this weekend as it is oil & filter change time again. Laughing

I've got an oil extractor, but to be honest I've never used it on the Defender. The sump bung is so accessible it's daft not to use it, as Cetane said, you've got to go under there for the filter anyway.

There's no reason it won't work if you really want to, just check the extraction hose is slightly longer than the dip stick.

It's the antiroll bar, but making sure the vehicle is level helps, it only hits the roll bar briefly, and you can wipe it off with a rag. It's far more messy removing the filter than draining the oil.

Ive just done mine today. Make sure the bowl youre using to catch it in is big enough. Whip the plug (Quickly) out and there's literally no mess. The oil filter however....

The other thing I learned very quickly with the Puma is not to attempt an oil and filter change outside if there is the slightest hint of a light breeze. Rolling with laughter If my driveway was made of steel, it would now be rustproofed for life with old engine oil.

Lol. We’ve moved a year ago. And this is not the driveway where you can have a little mishap since it’s parked in the road. Therefore i was looking at the Pela. Other brands of cars seem to have postive experiences but i can’t find any defender cases. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

I large drain pan and a large rubber/vinyl/carpet mat laid on the road to catch any drips and you should be fine.

You're still going to have to do the messy bit - the oil filter - on the road anyway.

After so many positive comments Laughing I have to try it.

Just ordered my Pela 6000. And I will keep you informed.

Plan is. First drain the oil out with the Pela. Then take out drain plug to check if there is any oil left, so I'am sure the Pela works (or not). a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Back in the day when I used to swing spanners for a living we used to use something like this when dropping fluids on the deck wasnt an option.



Was just a BIIIG metal tray that was put under the drain tank.

You get the idea.

Why not fit a Difflock drain plug and solve all your problems? See http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic29173.html for more info and links.

I use one since it avoids the need to remove my underbody protection to drain the oil.
