Bilstein and springs
Hi all...

I've been doing some research on the forum regarding dampers, specifically Bilsteins, and springs. We do 95% motorway driving with the Defender and occassional, incidental off-roading - nothing extreme.

It's main, intended use was to ferry us back and forth to Eastern Europe - on the way out it is usually heavily loaded (again, nothing extreme - not pushing design limits) however on the way back it is nearly empty save for some luggage and occupants.

I've got to tame the bucking and bouncing and I read that someone used Bilstein B46-0243 on the front and B46 0253 on the rear with great effect.

Supposedly these are direct replacements for the LR dampers. I assume that the Bilsteins offer better performance than the stock ones, i.e. they're not a like-for-like replacement?

There is also a thread where part numbers "625670020" and "625530030" are mentioned - but I can't find these anywhere. Are these the same dampers?

Also - can anyone recommend replacement springs? The ride in the back is very harsh unless I am carrying loads of stuff... and even then it is still bouncy.

I've tried different tyre pressures, and this has a minimal effect.

Lastly... would polybushes make any difference to the ride?

Eutek,

I'm not 100% sure but XS models such as yours (and mine) used to come with 'HD' - Heavy Duty springs advertised as standard fit. Maybe you would be better off downgrading to whatever is classed as standard or an equivalent?

Ive been looking at a similar thing as I find the unladen ride too stiff and punchy. The rear springs appear to be 225lb ( fronts 175lb) so I'm wondering if a bespoke rear set could be the solution along with the uprated shocks. I'm going to have a chat with extreme 4x4 who seem to make bespoke springs and try softer rate , or a more progressive rate. Will let you know what happens!

Agree with the Koni they are great dampers, and are adjustable, and that could be the key for you..

Honker, why would you want to talk to extreme! They are trouble, (scorpion before). If you have suspension questions I would talk to Devon 4x4, or but better is Gwyn Lewis.

You could also try Flatdog - they do springs for 90's.

i 'sorted' my 90 XS by putting standard LR road springs on the rear and Koni heavy track shocks all round.
it has mad a huge difference and it will still carry a heavy load when needed or just me.

search the forum there are many posts on this subject.

standard vs HD spring info:

90 4 seat station wagon (2400 Kg) - NOW
Front - Driver's side REB500200 Red/green/white
Front - Passenger side REB500220 Red/green/orange
Rear - Driver's side RKB500290 Red/green/green
Rear - Passenger side RKB500280 Red/green/red

90 4 seat station wagon (2550 Kg) - ORIGINAL FIT
