Wet black “stuff” in exhaust.
Yesterday completed a 150 mile journey to a campsite. When I got here I noticed inside my exhaust looked wet and oily. Couldn’t resist poking my finger in. First thoughts were oil. But soon realised this was black sooty water. The wetness dried from the exhaust in 5 mins.

Any ideas?

The average chemical formula for common diesel fuel is C12H23, ranging from approx. C10H20 to C15H28.

Water H2O and soot C are just 2 of the waste products of the combustion process, when combined with oxygen O from air.
Would seem normal to me.

It might be a good idea to regularly check the engine coolant level, just in case any is finding it's way into the exhaust.

If it’s running ok, and levels remain ok. Then I wouldn’t worry.

A UK model 2.2 shouldn't have a sooty exhaust, due to the DPF.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

In a typical UK climate, on average for every gallon of fuel you burn you emit a gallon of water. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

Thanks for the replies. It seems I’m being a hypochondriac. Having only had my defender a short time and never being able to look up a car exhaust before as they are now all hidden and pointed to the ground, I was a little shocked especially initially thinking it was oil.

I shall monitor levels, which I’m sure will be fine, then sleep easy tonight.
