Depends on where you are I guess - definitely not that if you're in an agricultural area then you're unlikely to get anywhere close to that. A mate down the road has been left stranded for drivers so been giving him a hand when he's desperate.

I guess on housing developments, motorways etc., it's likely to be okay but trust me even for someone who's in his early thirties you get a battering on farm sites. Mind you two of us were shifting >2000 tonnes per day on a pair of 6t dumpers so we were moving somewhat... Ed

So 8 weeks on, any developments on the driving front...

Remind when I saw this in my Twitter feed:

James Glancy (@jaglancy) Tweeted:
Baroness Vere of Norbiton, the Minister for Roads, sent me a nice letter asking me to drive lorries!

I've had that letter too. I'm not tempted in the least.

I'd have to work about 80 hours a week driving a lorry to match what I'm currently earning in 37 hours a week (plus o/t & standby) in the energy sector. Total no brainer.

This "driver shortage" will continue so long as drivers work long hours in rubbish conditions with no benefits and being treated like dirt by everyone they encounter. The entire industry needs an overhaul. Chucking a few more quid a week at drivers is putting a band aid over a severed limb. 2011 110 USW

I drive for a living but not HGV, I enjoy driving but there’s nothing that I’ve heard/read that would persuade me to part with my hard earned and go for class 1. Once upon a time I fancied it but not now. 23.5MY 90 D250 X-Dynamic SE, Pangea Green

How do you manage to do 84 hours? That’s Split over 2 working weeks? I take it you can’t do much driving for a few days now.

ETA That’s average 14.5 hours a day, how do fit that into the rules?

Hours extended to dangerous levels, 1 million letters randomly sent out, 100 military drivers roped in and emergency 5 month visas offered to EU drivers. Long term planning in this country is counted in hours and days not years. WARNING.

Your thinking of actual driving time which is up to 90 hours per fortnight. Working time, breaks and POA don’t count towards that!

Legally I can under the EU rules (unchanged after brexit) work 90 hours per week, a fortnight in a row with 24 hours off in between then 45 hours off then potentially the same again, loading and tipping times makes this easily possible depending on haulage discipline. Formerly mao99999
