HGV Licence
Hi, I would like any advice please regarding my licence, I’ve googled and the answers that come up are inconclusive so hopefully someone on here will be able to advise me Thumbs Up I have had a class 1 hgv licence since I was 23 years old I’m now 53 and I have not driven any hgv for around 8 years, I had a medical when I was 45 however when my next one was due at 50 I let it lapse, due to now having an office job, we are now looking at relocating and with the hgv driver shortages I would like to start driving again, can I just restart by having a medical and then advising DVLA or have I lost my class 1 entitlement by missing a medical, any advice please would be appreciated Thumbs Up many thanks Paul

A quick Google found this, which suggests you simply have to complete a medical and send off for your licence again. Under the current rules, the DVLA will issue you another licence as there is no time limit.

I would take a copy of all aspects of your driving licence as they have previous for 'loosing' entitlements, etc and then claiming they were never there...........

Hi, thanks for the link LandRoverAnorak much appreciated, that is a clear guide and better than the ones I saw last night when searching, excellent, I am going to push on with this as we want to relocate next year and my office job is becoming more and more tedious and seemingly having more and more put on me it has turned an enjoyable job into one that is a daily struggle Rolling Eyes , Supacat I will definitely keep you posted with this, I now have to see about the digital tachometer side as our 3 lorries were older and all had mechanical tachos fitted, I can’t see an issue with the medical side I passed it with flying colours at 45 and I still cycle 60 to 70 miles a week so fingers crossed for that Thumbs Up many thanks Paul

Try the construction plant industry

much better than driving a lorry in my opinion, next to no paperwork and no DVSA/police hounding you and no Joe public trying to ram you lol

wages are reasonable at the moment, dump truck drivers are averaging 18-20ph at the mo 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

Hi thanks all for your comments, they’re much appreciated Thumbs Up I hadn’t thought of plant machinery, that is my current job inspecting and clearing plant and Inspecting and producing CoC,s for farm machinery and groundcare machinery for us at our head office also for all of our U.K. Dealers which in itself is a great job but with our company like many others becoming paperless I am being thrown in at the deep end having to produce and use and share spreadsheets which I am not liking one bit, trying to manage my time is a real challenge. Many thanks Paul

We’ve had drivers come and go, albeit PCV, they go through the medical and driver CPC and they’re good to go.

I’m thinking about going for my HGV, Class 2 will do me, or going back into the diggers, got my tickets years ago but struggled finding work due to lack of experience, so not sure it’s worth the hassle paying to go through the backhoe and 360 excavator again. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Firstly there isn’t a driver shortage there is a lack of drivers willing to work for such a low wage. Whistle

To the OP I believe it will be just a case of gaining the medical a form, and the farcical DCPC combined with previous experience you will walk into a job Thumbs Up probably a digital tachograph card also.

Plant is a better job but requires expensive training and experience to get you where you want to be.

As a first hand review of HGV driving may I digress,
It’s a horrible job! I’ve been doing it since I was 23 circa 18 years now and yes you can make a decent living but and a very big but I regularly averaged 76 hour a week (legally) leaving home 5am Monday and not being back til Saturday afternoon and still only paid 76 hours and a little subsistence.

I now work 4 on 4 off and feel part time still working up-to 58 hours in 4 days again legally.

I’m in specialised haulage so the rates are enhanced but if I was to work the same hours at Amazon, Lidl or Aldi etc in warehousing I’d probably earn similar Embarassed without the risk of driving a 44 ton artic and all the associated obstacles.

Again if you want to work it’s an honest living and there’s a lot worse jobs but it’s a frame of mind you get into and if you love driving you won’t for much longer hence my daily driver car did 800 miles last year Rolling with laughter Formerly mao99999

I’ve been driving a truck for the last 17 months while I’ve been furloughed it’s decent money but not for me. Said I would work this week but only done one shift.
Back to work on my bus next week

I went to the buses at age 19 as it was free training and guaranteed job, been there almost 17 years. So I’m asking myself do I want to start over again. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Hi, thanks for all of the comments good and bad Thumbs Up I would definitely be looking at 4 on and 4 off if I was to go back to driving and no nights out either, I am looking for a change in job and not chasing high wages and would even be happy to do odd days, I’ve also got forklift counter balance and reach truck licences so with updating the licence I’m opening up as many avenues as I can before we relocate Thumbs Up cheers Paul
