Gluing vent seals to bulkhead
I have attempted to glue the vent seals (old style seals) to the bulkhead but result was a fail. I used a contact cement, one that comes in a yellow/black package, but it failed to grip to the rubber. Very good bond to the paint however.

Before I try again (as it was a pain to remove the glue from the bulkhead again) are there any good tips? Perhaps alternative glues? And as important, where did Landrover apply the glue to the seal? All the way inside where the spot welds in the bulkhead are, and the 2 ridges on the rubber or further out? Below is a picture of the contact points of the new seal.

Sorry can't help but watching with interest as about to do this on mine. As a back up I've got the foam seals which stick on the flaps instead, but I'd like it to be correct.

The foam seals are easier to install, as they come ready with double sided tape. The rubber ones not.
I have read online mixed opinions of which is better for sealing, and keeping water out.. for me the old rubber seals worked fine, and want period correct seals.

I did remove the old ones out long time ago, when I did some repairs. and I am sure that I used contact cement back them to re glue them. They were starting to come off, and the flaps were holing them in place, but that was after very long time!

One gluing method I am considering is polyurethane.. but I do not know if it is too strong.. in case one day I need to take the rubber seals off again.

I make a cross section, and indicated sides A, B, C and D, incase someone can suggest where to apply the glue Smile

Note that today attempt was on side A only - my thinking about keeping the water as far away from getting in as possible.

When I replaced my bulkhead, I used foam seals. I've no recollection whther I used the orignal tape glue, or something else.

I think the most common issue that leads to these seals leaking is corrosion in the 'hinge pins'. Once they stop moving easily you have to push harder on the vent lever, and the vent flap itself starts to bend. Once it's bent, you'll never get a good seal.

I think that you need to be sure your vent flaps are as close to flat/level as possible; to use greased stainless vent pins; and to use new foam seals. It's worked for me. Bulkhead vents are dry for the last 10 years. Donald

Good tip there Donmacm.
I read some reviews on 3m weatherstrip adhesive, and looks like good stuff.
In the absence of any advise where to apply glue, I will probably apply glue to points B and C. But will wait until the dash is back in place so I can pull the flaps tight against the seal while the glue fully cures. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I had these rubber seals on my 110 300 tdi, but they seemed to make it worse and started whistling so switched back to foam ones... problem solved..... @steve_overland on Insta.

I found they were too tight on the flaps when closed as they are a significant thickness and created a worse seal at the bottom edge.

Tigerseal would glue them just fine, I don't think they're worth it though.

Thank you for your replies.

What I did notice is that the earlier 90/110/Defenders and the later Defenders have a different design for the hinge plate that is spot welded to the flap itsef. On the earlier design it looks like it has a 'spring' to the hinge plate while the later ones was more solid. Perhaps it is one of the cause why the rubber seal works for some but not for others.

Ok, quick update. I used a PU adhesive / sealant. Ran a very small bead of the adhesive around the the outer corner of the bulkhead, placed the seal, installed the vents and closed the vents shut as hard as I could possibly shut them without breaking anything for a few days.
