I've seen a significant increase in filter element life using the raised air intake on my Tdi powered D90. I built it myself using 3" diameter aluminum tubing because the 2.5" commercially available ones didn't seem to have enough area to maintain the required flow rate (according to the calculations from the manufacturer of the centrifugal pre-cleaner). There has been no affect on the performance of the Rover.

I ordered my new 110 with the raised air intake as well because we have a lot of dusty roads here in the southeast.

Haven’t they only been rai at least since pumas...although you could get a safari snorkel, with mods to make it a true snorkel

That said I remember in the puma, even with many mods, there was still too many electronics to take that deep! Mike

The problem with the Puma is that whatever you fit to the outside of the wing, the gubbins under the wing is still riddled with holes and leaks. The only way to sort the Puma out properly is to replace everything upstream of the turbo, including the filter box.

Did Pate at BAS do a test on RAI and snorkels on his rolling road? Im sure he did and as expected yes they reduce performance.

He certainly did and I was there with him at the time - it was a 2.2 Defender and we tested about 4 or 5 RAI (snorkels) on the rolling road and every one reduced the BHP by about 10 Shocked

We tried the tops facing forwards, backwards and with/without forced air and even took everything off the Defender and tried it with an open wing vent and the power was no different Exclamation

Having taken part in various winch events I think the issue with the new Defender is 2 fold, firstly the electrics as even thought LR say everything is IR67 rated I would not like to try that out and secondly, the car will simply float at the std wading depth of 900mm Thumbs Up Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free

"UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" ----is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" -----------is how far you take the fence with you.

Its not that bad on the puma - i kept it all there and waterproofed it, reasonably simple like a few LR products ive had. But most airbox systems are the same, its the electronics that would worry me more...istr the td5 defender ecu got hammered by a few people i knew and same in puma Mike

D3 was much the same - it was quite unnerving crossing the lake at Tong in a dealership D3 ( Shocked ) feeling the car attempt to float and the air suspension driving the wheels on to the lake bed with super extended mode in an attempt to stop it!
