Just thinking outside the box. Can anyone identify a 4x4 vehicle that has been built with a transverse (front) engine that also has a HI/LO transfer box?

The Panda 4x4 was launched in June 1983, powered by a 965 cc engine with 48 bhp (36 kW) derived from the Autobianchi A112 or Fiat 100 series engine. Known simply as the Panda 4x4, this model was the first small, transverse-engined production car to have a 4WD system.[citation needed] The system itself was manually selectable, with an ultra-low first gear. Under normal (on-road) conditions starting was from second, with the fifth gear having the same ratio as fourth in the normal Panda. Austrian So no cigar  |

Can’t think of anything beyond the some of the old Japanese systems (like the Toyota Tercel) which had a lower main-gearbox first gear only accessible in 4WD.

Haha, that was my removed post. I thought of the Justy (I still have a scrap one under the hedge), but they only had a 4WD shift button on the top of the stick. No transfer box. My old Imprezza 1.8 and the GLF I had before that had a HI/LO transfer box, but they were fitted in line behind the flat 4 engine. They were unusual though in that the Diff and driveshafts for the front axle came out of the front of the gearbox so there was no front propshaft as such. I don't think it had a seperate transfer box either, rather all the gubbins for the low ratios were inside the main gearbox. Clever cars they were to be fair.

Yes Subaru has one main casing that contains the ggearset, front diff and centre diff units........but basically RWD style arrangement behind the engine

My mum used to have a Tercel. Engine dropped a conrod IIRC. shame was a good car. |

Good call - think they’re more gear reduction units front and rear rather than a transfer box as such, but I doubt there’s anything much else.
