For me it would be general road use - to/from work. Towing cars around race circuits and forest tracks. Things get heavy with a Harvey Frost(Changed a bit since these pics - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic36874...rvey+frost ) on tow and a MK2 Escort or an Evo hanging off a rope coupled with muddy/wet/churned up forest tracks wheels do slip.
Standard BFG At 235/85 R16 tyres.
I think time to send a few emails(already contacted Nigel) 1999 Defender TD5 110

For that application I would say that a standard Puma set-up with a four-gear front Rover-pattern diff and a four-gear P38 diff at the rear would be entirely adequate. The same set-up but with torque-biasing diffs (e.g., Ashcroft ATB) would be better still, but mainly from the towing-on-loose-surfaces aspects, although it is stronger too. What you describe is not especially heavy-duty use of the vehicle.

An Ashcroft ATB in the transfer box might also be worth considering.

The two-gear front diff is not really strong enough for any purpose, in my opinion.

Thanks BW. I do have a centre ATB and that works OK.
Its not heavy use, but at times, grip is not always there especially, up hill drags in muddy forest roads. 1999 Defender TD5 110

The front does spin and now and then the rear. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have an ARB sitting here beside me and it's a solid piece of kit. Many people run them in their Salisbury/Dana 60 without any issues, and some of them do heavy work. I'll be installing this in the coming days, but unfortunately won't get to test it for a while as it's a full vehicle rebuild being done.

for your application and based on front spinning firstwhich is how i read your reply i would be putting a locker in the front axle. Cheers

I agree some kind of traction aid is a huge improvement over open differentials + it adds strength. We went skiing with the kids today and I almost got stuck, because right side of the vehicle was in the deep snow, left side had traction (theoretically) but it was no help. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

I have been runing a Quaife Torque Sensing dif for the last 30 years and over 300k ( moving it from one vehicle to the next) and it still performs faultlessly and has required no maintenance except for normal oil changes

This is what I’m planning. I have a very early MY2002 110 with a Salisbury, otherwise I’d put an Ashcroft ATB.

Won’t have problems building it here in Canada - if I tell my axle guy I have a Land Rover Salisbury axle he says he’s never worked on one. Tell him it’s a Dana 60, but metric, and it’s the 5th this week 🤣

Cheers JST. An ATB would be my choice. Would having an open diff at the rear and ATB up front cause any cornering issues in the dry/wet on tarmac? 1999 Defender TD5 110

No, it won't. I have run many miles with ATB front, open rear, after breaking rear diffs.
