knock in steering column over rough roads

I've just had a bunch of work done on my 90; and this weekend was the first time we were able to take it out and put any significant mileage on it- I've noticed a knocking noise from what feels like the steering column whenever we're driving over rough or bumpy roads. I'm nearly certain it wasn't there before. Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to have a look first or what might be an obvious culprit (to someone who's not very mechanically inclined)?

Open the bonnet and get a mate to turn the steering wheel left and right without the engine running. Doesn't need to be big movements, just small.

While they do that, check the steering system for anything that it shouldn't be doing. Even if it happens only while driving on the rough, there should be some clue.

Drop arm ball joint will probably be the culprit. Just make sure you get a decent one (I always buy genuine) and get whoever replaces it to replace ALL the parts and not just the ball itself as the cup at the bottom is what wears the most.
