puma 2.2 blowing smoke and oil in coolant
I'm wondering if any of you guys have had thew same problems im having with my 2.2 puma engine.

The history is the engine let go a few months ago, loads of whiteish smoke and make some blue smoke.
first thought it was a turbo but swapped this and still the same.

pulled the egr cooler off and pressure tested and all good.

so now ive had the head off and skimmed, valves reseated and rebuilt with new gaskets.

started up today and still the same with loads of smoke out the exhaust and is running rough.
compression test didnt show anything , injectors have been flow tested and all ok.

ive now noticed fresh oil in the coolant expansion bottle , i'm now thinking either a cracked head or block.

i did ask for thee head to be pressure tested when skimmed.


just wondering if you guys have had a similar experince or any ideas before i pull the engine apart again and rebuild the bottom end ?

I've had a transit with the 2.2 doing the same and it was the head gasket.
Also had a 2.4 puma transit doing the same and that time it was the oil cooler.
Same basic engine noth variants very common for the oil cooler to fail.
I'm sure you can bypass them to test but I have no experience with this.0

cheers for the reply oldyellar,

Ive done the head gasket and i think ive narrowed it down to two faults now, your correct about the oil cooler and oil in the coolant expansion bottle , im going to bypass the cooler and flush the system to see if it cures the oil issues.

The other fault with smoke out of the exhaust is down to the injectors not controlling correctly.

Ive had my Autel 906bt diagnostic tool hooked up to it and havent got any faults but seeing high fuel pressure on idle , around 450-500 basr when it should be around 300 bar.

You might need a pcm update if the injectors are not fueling correctly i had a 2.2 transit cracked piston 4 because of it over fueled.

Oil in cooling
Hi,
I did have oil in cooling systems.
In my case it was a internal leak in the oil cooling system
I did replace it with the last Ford model. Ford part 2027615 with metal oil filter
The oil filter is not the same.
The work after was to clean the cooling systems.
I did use a special product for that, 2 times and after an other product from the ktchen
I think I can say it is clean.

But if I have to follow Ford instructions I should replace all ruber tube
I did not because not easy

I did have no symtom

Yes that is the updated oil filter from ford the metal one instead of the paper one in plastic housing.

I've heard that you will see bubbles in the coolant if it's the head (while engin is running)
Pressure in the engin is so much higher than in the coolant whereas the pressure in the oil is almost the same

Perhaps you give it a try ?

ok so update , ive now got a new oil cooler housing ready to go on and a pressure control valve for the pump.

I'm not over concerned now as i'm pretty sure its was the oil cooler, hopefully the new pressure valve will cure the excessive white smoke and the rough idling .

I'll keep you guys posted

Its a well known problem in the transit world, right from the very first puma engine vans way back in 2000 Shocked feel old saying that. Fingers crossed it solves your problem

so an update. just to let people know and it might help others.

The issue. i had was the VCV valve in the pump had failed and stuck open, the engine was running 500 bar at idle , i replaced the valve but the engine was still running rough and loads of smoke still.

I found that all 4 injectors had failed and were stuck open due to the high pressure from the pump , so i replaced all the injector and did a learn and coding for all new parts .

All is well now .

stupid question time presser relief valve at end open fuel rail opens at 2000BAR so how as 500bar damage the injectors Question

fuel pressure is controlled up to 1600 bar

the 2.2 tdci doesn't have a pressure relief valve like the 2.4 tdci, its a euro 8 engine , thats how i found out the issue , as i connected my Autel 906bt diagnostic tool and found out i had huge amount of pressure just at idle and climbed when revving.

I replaced the vcv and realised it didn't have a relief valve , i then started looking at the injectors.
