That is an amazing transformation, Clayton Thumbs Up

Thanks for posting. It’s good to see things preserved.

What do you make of the animals? I like to see them but like LR modifications, they are all a matter of taste?

Just discovered this thread, excellent work there Clayton. Ours is booked in to be scraped / wired & new bonnets later this year.
Will be interesting to watch as I’m a builder.

It is Daz but it's dry, much better than all that wet stuff, you can layer up and your moving about a lot so your keeping warm, well nice to be getting on with the job we have just started yesterday. Got the roof all prepped now, so all good to go on Monday with putting reed on and the biggest bonus is, for once were on the sunny side Very Happy Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Another bit of work carried out on the roof at the moment that we are re-thatching that we don't get to do this way as most of the cottages have wall plates and the ovis ( first line / lane ) is usually crooked on so in the first pic you will see the ovis roll tied up to what size you will need to get the right kick ( angle ) so that the reed will stay tight, under pressure when fixed with the spars, so as the last thatcher did not do this Rolling Eyes it made it so much harder for him to get the thatch at the right pitch, he had put it on with none of this Sad
Once the ovis roll had been put on there would be a void behind it so we have packed it out and firmed it up with some spar and rod work ready for the ovis lane to have something firm to fix to

next pic just shows you what we have done is what the previous thatcher's have done before us and the thickness of our ovis roll

the last pic shows you with the ovis lane being put on and the angle is so much better, just think of what the angle would be like without the ovis roll on Rolling Eyes the butt ends ( bottom of the reed ) would be at least 4-5" lower and then the tops of the reed would be to high and not resting on the roof as it should be

this way does make for a nice change for us, more traditional Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Yep, great stuff. Now when I pass a thatched roof I look out for bits you mention. WARNING.

I love it when you post stuff like this. There a very few thatches near me. Only a few very old fishing or shrimping cottages on the old marshes now swallowed up by the suburbs of Southport. Quite rare as most have now been altered to slate
