I think down this part of the country and including Cornwall, it good that from our point of view that most of all the thatched property's were listed so they cannot be altered to slate or tiles 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

It’s a dark art Clayton, interesting watching the guys work ( I’m a builder) it’s definitely not something you could have a go at after watching someone do it for a while.
The guys should be finished the weekend (2 weeks in total) |

At least you can watch it with a bit of knowledge knowing what they are doing
 we do get customers that are really interested in the way thatch is put on and they ask if they can have a go, we always try to help them and let them have a go with showing them what to do, after they have done a bit, they are so happy
That sounds about right for the time on doing the ridge and i see the old thatch is dressing up nicely, will look a picture when finished 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

I'm always trying not to repeat to much content on here, unless you don't mind ? we had to re-ridge a nice cottage a couple weeks back and i have finally sorted out the pic's for you, so here goes . . . .
This re-ridge is to have a pattern on as we did before, but the roof on both sides have been wire netted to prevent the birds doing damge, we don't like doing this but in this case it was necessary, in the first pic is what we started with  Click image to enlarge then you undo the main roof netting from the ridge netting and fold it down to get this Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge so you don't have to take all the netting off, as we are not dressing the roof at all we do this to save a lot of time picking out all the rubbish bits of reed Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Once all the sheets are on both sides you can then concentrate on the ridge by taking of the ridge netting, then taking the old ridge off, what's left of it anyway Click image to enlarge to get to this stage ready for putting the block line on Click image to enlarge block line on Click image to enlarge once you have put the block line on both sides, it's time to put the ridge line on both sides Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge then as you come along trimming the top of the ridge, we put our trade mark cross work on Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge once that has been done on both sides, you can start to cut out the pattern work Click image to enlarge pattern work all done and the rubbish cleaned off ready for the sheets to be took off Click image to enlarge once the sheets are off you can start to put back the wire netting on the ridge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge then when all the ridge netting has been put on you can unfold the main roof netting back up to the ridge netting to be fixed again Click image to enlarge the finished job after a good 2 weeks work Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge We were well pleased how the ridge came out and the owner was as well  1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. That looks really smart, Clayton
You say that you don't like using netting but it was necessary on this roof.,What necessitates the use of netting or leaving it uncovered? Is it just down to the local bird population?? I don't mind some repeat stuff. It's all good to see |

Using netting is to prevent bird damage but also the worse thing to attack thatched roofs is, squirrels 
The netting does help the older thatched roofs but does not need the netting when new on, birds and squirrels don't like new thatch for some reason
We always use netting on the ridges both sides as they get a lot of use from birds and helps a lot over the years to come 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.
