Gear stick thread size (R380?)
Hi guys, needing the thread size for both the gear stick and diff lock lever that the knobs screw to on the TD5 (that be the R380?) and curious if anybody knew it off hand or had advice on how to remove them before I go attempt to take them off and potential break stuff Mr. Green

Cheers Stuart

So I went out and bought some more nuts since I no longer have access to any of my stuff back home and the diff lock knob has an M10 thread whilst I'm certain the gear knob is an M13 thread. I say that as only purchased up to M12 nuts and I could not get it to thread on the stick, but I'll go and buy some more tomorrow evening to make sure.
Thanks though guys! Thumbs Up Stuart

It won't be M13 because there is no standard for a 13mm thread in the ISO Coarse Series standard. So M12 or M14 are your options.

If it really isn't an M12 x 1.75mm pitch ISO Coarse Series thread, it could be a metric fine series thread (unlikely) or it could be 1/2" UNC or UNF.

Series 1 and 2 gear knobs were 1/2" BSF.

I've found a reference to the LT77 being 1/2" x 20tpi, which can only be a UNF thread.

I can't find the definitive answer for the R380 and unfortunately don't have one with a screw-on knob to measure.

Ah, yes... the elusive M13, what am I talking about?!? Thank god I didn't go to Uni for 5 years to get a masters in civil engineering... Whistle I need to learn to go to bed earlier!

There's no way its an M12, the nut wouldn't even catch the thread. I even removed some of the paint and guff off that's collected over the years to make sure.

Just wish I had my tools to measure this stuff instead of buying even more hardware that I already have back home! Banging Head Stuart

I think you are probably going to win with 1/2" UNF.

1/2" UNC is a very coarse thread at 13 tpi (coarser, marginally, than M12), whereas UNF is 20 tpi. I'd be a little surprised at 13 tpi on a gear lever knob, but you never know.

Is a Disco2 the same as a Defender? If so, I could whip my knob off and find out for sure.

It looks to me to be UNF. That and the fact it takes lots of unscrewing to undo! Stuart

Just for future reference if anyone comes looking here, the thread for the gearstick knob was in fact 1/2" UNF with the thread for the diff knob being M10.

Thanks guys Thumbs Up I'll make a post later on why I needed these. Stuart
