Can pull out key out of ignition with engine still running

Hi,

I am looking for help with a weird ignition problem, with the engine still running I can pull out the key out of final rotation. Does anyone know how to fix this strange minor problem please?

I presume this is on your 200Tdi?

If so you need to figure out if the fuel stop solenoid is at fault, or if its an electrical problem to the solenoid.

Is it possible to measure the voltage across the solenoid with the key in the on and off positions? This might give you a clue as to the fault. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Do you mean that the engine keeps running after you turn the key to the off position and pull it out (if so, see post above), or do you means that the key can be pulled out from the barrel when it is in the engine running position?

If the latter, the lock barrel is excessively worn and needs replacing (and I believe that this is now an MOT failure fault, but may be wrong).

Ah I misread Ollie's post. I think you are right blackwolf, the key is being removed from the barrel in the 'on' position. 2005 Td5 90 XS

You need a new ignition barrel. Mine had this "design feature" when I bought it. BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group

Its a new ignition barrel that I put in a 1986 90 so it might be a production error.

I know it doesn't help, but this was pretty much standard on many Brit cars in the 70s. Along with being able start a car with pretty much any key.

Really handy if you forgot your keys - just borrow someone else's and give them back once the engine is running Rolling Eyes Not great for security though.

As said above, it sounds like it needs a new barrel.

Use an elastic band and ty that to the light switch. It still falls out but you know where it is. Roel

On one of my Series Ones the ignition key is so loose it tends to fall out on bumps, so I always clip it to a tether so I can find it if it does. On one occasion I managed without realising to start the vehicle and drive off using my garage door key, which is completely different in almost every respect except size.
