Rails for Roof Rack - Prototype
I'm working on a rail addition to the roof rack for added function and a bit of throwback look. Still in process getting the bends correct and the brackets aligned. Will be powder coated black when finished.

Interesting idea. Show us a bit more detail, please. Darren

Finished the rails. I'm happy with how strong they are and that the powder coating matches well with the rack.

I used a Shapeoko CNC to design and mill the brackets out of 3/4" aluminum bar. The rails are 3/4" aluminum tube about .25" thick. Only real difficulty was getting the curves right on the brackets and the front tube. Lots of scrap from failed attempts.

Given the funky cut-out on the rack in the back for the antenna I didn't take them around the back. Still thinking about that.

Thanks,

The brackets are very nicely done. My initial thought is that you might need more of them to support the tube if you plan on lashing anything to it, as it seems like quite long spans. Darren

Would you mind telling me how you secured the roof lights into the rack frame? There is no obvious way to get under the top plate part of the frame that I can see to secure a nut? It looks great with the frame and lights

Looking at the mirror reflection in picture 2, they are bolted all way through the rack, if I see this correctly.
