If you fit security nuts and completely fill the cap screw socket it must make it harder for the scumbags!

The two nuts are attached to the plate for both the upper and lower hinges. Before now I have had to use brute force to shear the nut off the plate (a square socket helps) to remove these.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Think I will tackle it next time with a but more aggression!

Hi, do you mind me asking how you got on with the b-pillar hinge screws? Tried to undo mine today but totally rusted and I gave up. I couldn't work out whether the square plate is welded to the two nuts or whether the nuts are separate from the plate. Doesn't really matter anyway, point being I couldn't get them out on either side. Wonder if there were any words of wisdom you could provide?

Big Cry

Words of wisdom? Sounds a bit late for your B-pillar screws, but if you want to avoid the same happening to your other hinge screws, maybe replace them all while you still can. New ones easily obtainable from your dealer or from Dan at Duckworthparts, unless you want to go for stainless (you might want to there on Jersey as if you are close to the coast, the air probably constantly is pretty salty).
In either case, buy yourself a can of this Weicon paste, and dip the new screws into it. If you go for new mild steel screws, keep an eye on rust reappearing, and then replace that screw by another again. If you replace the 10 cross member to body screws, also use a plastic washer as Olaf from Entreq smartly did on mine.
I keep a supply of a dozen or more of each of the genuine screw types and nuts as spares for the future. Probably won't need them all, but now that the Defender production has stopped, Land Rover already replaced the genuine safari door to rear panel screws by a different more glossy look (see in an earlier post here and the solution to that), but more recently also made one other type of Defender door screws obsolete and replaced it by a bit different looking screw with a different part number. It works, but it is not the same, luckily when it is in the door you won't notice. That is probably only the beginning of parts becoming obsolete, therefore happy that I have built a real stock of the correct genuine screws for the future.
As to your B-pillar screws, if you want to keep your Defender for longer time, maybe worth to take some drastic corrective action after all. Those rusted plates, nuts and screws are not good news for your B-pillar itself. Maybe better to remove it all and try to replace by new, if you still can find these (from a breaker?).
Afraid this is as far as my wisdom goes. Good luck. Thumbs Up
Eric

Thanks Eric, should have mentioned that I replaced all the other screws without any problems. To be fair the old ones were in pretty good condition considering they have been in for 12 years with rust mainly on the heads. I actually went for the mild steel screws after reading this thread as its not that painful a job and I'm quite happy replacing them with the extras that I purchased.

I did look for the Weicon paste that you recommended but can't seem to find any uk sellers. Are you aware of any?

I was thinking or replacing my rear cross member screws to stainless bolts and use aluminium cup washers to these as found here https://www.pro-bolt.com/aluminium-cup-was...-10-7.html
I was going to add an aluminium washer too. This is all for the looks but read this thread and think I may not do this now. Any thoughts? I note that Outlander Vehicles use the same so thought this was OK? They said there is no corrosion because they use stainless with aluminium washers so protected the 2 from contacting? Is this right? See photo for more details

Stainless and aluminium can be a complete nightmare, ask anyone who owns a Patriot roof rack.

In that pic it’s nylon washers. Anodised also works as it is a galvanic barrier.

It was summer 2015 when after a few years I removed all SS door screws again and replaced by new genuine mild steel screws, so that’s 5 years now. Earlier this year had noticed that some of the bottom hinge screws had a bit of surface rust, so as always had been the plan, took my box with stock, found the correct ones, and replaced them. The only ones that showed a bit of surface rust were those fixing the lower hinges to the A and B posts. The screws fixing the hinges to the door itself are still as new, as also all the screws for the upper hinges. Thanks to the Weicon paste which did not harden in those 5 years, it was easy to unscrew, and no other rust on the screws whatsoever. New ones went in with ample coating of new Weicon. If this is a repeat job every 5 years, pretty happy.
Eric

Picture of bottom screw with rust, the top screw is already a new one.

And here both are replaced

Seeing the difference between the new ones I had put in and the 5 year old ones, even when not rusty, decided to replace the lot. Have enough stock of those screws anyway for another few decades, so all new factory fresh screws and nuts now with plenty of Weicon paste. So good for 5 years again.
