Strange Intake Noise
Hello folks,

Can anybody help with a strange intake noise that my 110 has developed? You can hear it at about 4 seconds and 12 seconds in this short recording:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/adqk6i843u01o77/Intake%20Noise.m4a?dl=0

It sounds, for all the world, like somebody cupping their hand over the end of a vacuum cleaner hose and typically happens at the point of changing up from first to second and second to third. Also occasionally when feathering a light throttle. It generally doesn't affect performance, although occasionally it's accompanied by a 'hiccup'.

It's been doing it for ages, on and off, and I originally thought it was the EGR valve, but a new replacement didn't make any difference. Since then, it's had a new, larger intercooler, new silicon hoses and the pipe from wing to airbox replaced by a much larger diameter one as part of the snorkel install.

Last week, I discovered that one of the airbox lid clips had gone AWOL and thought I'd found the culprit, but again fitting a replacement has made no difference, which has led me to ask for help here.

The only thing of significance left between open air and the inlet manifold is the turbo. Could it be something like a sticking wastegate? If so, any pointers on how to approach?

Thanks, all. Darren

No, I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in the air intake system. Since fitting the snorkel, it's become very easy to hear it above everything else. Darren

Could your new hoses be collapsing?

Dunno Confused It's possible I suppose, but the noise was there before and after the change, so seems less likely. Darren

It'd have to be on the intake side sucking instead of an intercooler pressure.
Do you have anything that could be crumpling but springing back when the revs drop?

Nothing obvious. The pipe from RAI to airbox is now a length of 90mm spiral wound flexi pipe but it's good quality stuff that came as part of the Nakatanenga kit. Plus, as with the other hoses, the problem was there both before and after its' installation. Darren

Just a thought but worth asking

Have you have the vehicle serviced just before the noise started. Worth checking the Air intake pipes in case they were disconnected and then had a rag stuffed into them to keep crud out of them, then accidentally left in place.

Happened to me once on my previous 300Tdi.

Apart from noting that it won't be a sticking wastegate because you don't have one, you have a variable vane turbo, I don't have much to add, I'm afraid. It is an odd noise, that's for sure! You say that sometimes there is a hiccup at the same time? Do you have any stored fault codes?

I'll ponder about this for a while, and see if I can come up with any ideas (being mindful that I am less familiar with the 2.2 than the 2.4).

Hmm, thanks chaps. I can't tie it back to a particular service visit, unfortunately. In fact, that last two visits including replacing the EGR and intercooler/pipework respectively, with no apparent change.

Noted about the wastegate. If I'd thought about it more then I'd have realised that but can't get away from the thought that it sounds a bit like a dump valve Confused I haven't checked for fault codes but I'm not getting any warning lights. I'll plug in my IID and see if it says anything useful.

Unfortunately Grenadier, the only special power that my anorak provides is a degree of obsessing about details Laughing Darren

Stock airbox? are the two plastic "hooks" under the wing engaged? I have had a mechanic set the airbox lid on and snap closed the metal clips leaving the other side of the airbox not fastened proplerly. Roaming around πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄πŸ‡¨πŸ‡

Well, having failed to find anything obvious, I've dispatched it to my local LR indie for them to take a look tomorrow. Hopefully, they'll have better luck than me Rolling Eyes Darren
