Nope, all operating normally now. Darren

Well done. Do you have a link to the part or did you buy genuine? WARNING.

From what I remember the only way to buy a genuine replacement actuator is with a turbo attached and is therefore rather expensive. LR in its wisdom will not supply the actuator on its own, you have to go aftermarket.

Yeah, that's what I found, too. There isn't a part number for the actuator alone.

After much checking to make sure that I was getting the correct one (there are lots of different models that all look quite similar), I eventually went for this one from eBay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turbocharger-El...2749.l2649

I've put a bit more detail of the job on my build thread HERE, if anybody is interested. Darren

Thanks chaps. Mine is a 2.4 so probably different but good to know they can be bought separately. WARNING.

Just a quick addendum to this: I've now covered a few hundred miles since replacing the turbo actuator, including both some motorway and town driving, and the problem does indeed appear to be cured. It's also a lot smoother lower down the rev range making it much more pleasant to drive.

The moral of this story is that if you have odd gulping or sucking noises from your air intake then look to the turbo actuator. Despite what was suggested, they don't 'all do that, sir.' Smile Darren

Some time ago my actuator stuck on full boost (the well known chafed harness fault) and the induction noise was extremely spectacular!

As I said on page 2, the effect of a faulty actuator can be surprising. Mine has failed twice now, both times due to harness problems. The first time it stuck in zero boost mode and the vehicle was very useless (I seem to remember climbing Haldon Hill in second gear at a terrifyingly low speed and expecting to die at any moment), the sedond time it stuck in the full boost position and the noise was awesome - the roar from the intake was causing pedestrians to flee, mothers to cover their babies, and wildlife to stampede!

You don't know how happy this thread makes me!

I've been rambling on about this exact same issue since I had a new turbo fitted last summer and I suspect others here have had the same issue... partly discussed on this other thread:
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic68860.html

I get that same noise when coming up through the gears usually just before the 2k rev mark (I'm not sure if it's all gear as everything else is usually louder and drowns it out once up to speed).

I'm now going to try and find out if the actuator can be replaced separately on the turbo technics turbo I had fitted...

Bow down

Just wanted to say a big thanks to LandRoverAnorak for posting this because it has solved the problem that has been annoying me for at least a year!

In case it should help anyone else trying to diagnose 2.2 TDCI sticky turbo vanes, faulty turbo actuator or actuator linkage arm, the symptoms I experienced were:

- Very intermittent hesitation / ‘hiccup’ / loss of power when accelerating briskly from about 1950 rpm through 2000 rpm in 1st or 2nd gear

- Power drop is accompanied by an audible ‘squeak’ like you might imagine with a collapsing hose, coming from somewhere in front of the passenger side in my case

- Louder than usual ‘whoosh’ sound coming from the passenger side

- Louder than usual ‘booming’ sound when under load coming from drivers side

- Problem disappears with EGR closed remap (I normally run it with EGR normal, thanks to Pete at BAS for giving me both alternatives for diagnosis)

- No fault codes or lights

- No signs of leaking exhaust manifold or turbo gaskets

- No exhaust or intake leaks (according to the dealer diagnostics)

Initially I suspected the EGR valve, so I took it to the dealer who couldn’t find any problems and were reluctant to do any work on it. So I took it to an independent and asked them to change the EGR valve, which they did, but it didn’t make any significant difference although the MPG seemed to improve slightly.

After that I went back to the drawing board and stumbled across this post. Found a G-72 actuator on e-bay from seller Nerings, who confirmed it was pre-calibrated and just needed to be swapped. Great service, delivered next day.

I followed the advice here on how to swap it over, lubricated the actuator linkage and hey presto, a few hundred miles later I can confirm LandRoverAnoraks findings. Symptoms remain gone, it’s noticeably smoother in rpm range up to 2000 rpm and generally much quieter. So thanks again!

Great news! I'm going to replace mine, did you source yours from TurboVanes? Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

No, the seller on e-bay was called Nerings. Seems to be a UK seller, the item looks like a Chinese version, shipped from Latvia, cost about £100. I’ll probably send my original off to see if it can be refurbished.

Brilliant...thanks!

I was looking at this, not sure if its the same quality etc as the Latvia seller but if yours works its good enough for me!

The one you've linked to is a Hella branded one so I'm sure would be fine but it's not the correct one for a 2.2 Defender. The correct one is this:
