I used this
https://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics/1397-audi-car-headlining.html It was something different, and importantly wide enough!! Wasn't too hard to work with either - its not perfect, but for a DIY i was more than happy. More so the whole job cost me under 100, and the upholsterer I went to see wouldn't do it for less than 500, and with what i'd consider awfully cheap material. |

Hi Fabio,
I did mine not so long ago and posted links and comments on this thread: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72107.html I think what I took from doing the work, and seeing others comments, is that having a 'four way stretch' material would make life a lot easier. And using 'high temperature' spray adhesive. I think (for a 110) I used about 4-5 tins of glue. Thank you Gents.
I have done it now but i think i used the wrong fabric... So now I am a bit stuck on how to sort it. On some bits of it i didn't put enough glue, does anyone have any ideas as to how i can now glue it from the outside or maybe do something else? Regards Fabio |

I've been trying to think what I'd do in this situation....
I've read that, for older, sagging headlining one approach is to cut a hole or 'flap' and then get some new glue underneath. But I feel as if that might be a temporary repair on old material which has already stretched - not sure I'd try it on newer stuff. Sounds like a real hassle, but could you just start again?? Carefully cutting the material off and having another go at it with something different? Probably take a bit of time. The other option would be to pick up a 'used' set of headlinings? It wouldn't matter if it was a bit grubby if you were planni g to redo it. Sorry - don't think either of those suggestions are too easy. Hello Sir,
I don't want to remove it again as it is fragile and it could start to break along with all the trimming. I'm on holiday in a weeks time and then i'll have a good look at what i can do. Fabio |

I’m with Don on this one - I think you’ll find any ‘patching’ of a repair quite frustrating, as you may loosen your glue as you work, and end up with further work to do. If you’ve you think you’ve used the wrong stuff and don’t like it just think it’ll be the first thing you ever look at when you jump in the landy 😂 better to start again, 1st time was just practice!!

These guys seem to be the go-to giuys for headlining. I have recently bought some to re-upholster the headlining in my Disco 2, which is suffering from the usual failure of the backing foam.
I think the Defender material is slightly different to the Disco material, but I suspect that the failure mechanism is much the same. The accepted wisdom is that when it starts going you can't really do anything except replace it, since it is not the adhesive which fails, rather the foam layer that breaks down. I had great service from Martrim, but I haven't yet had the time to do the job. |
