Fault code reader for orange engine management light
Anyone in the Inverness area got a fault code reader I could hire / borrow/ use? I have the orange engine management light on on my 2016 Puma 2.2 and want to know what might be wrong. I guess it will be MAF or EGR related as it seems to be running well and just had all the oils done recently. Is there a reader I could purchase for under £100 that would help me diagnose the problem?

Have a look at this thread. You can get cheap ELM 327 readers plus free phone apps to read and delete (after recording) generic codes for a few pounds.

I have athe OBDLink LX . See my post half way down. It’s great for having permanently in the car. I now also have a nanocom as well but that’s kept at home and not cheap but delves into much more specific defender diagnostics.

If you have an iPhone or iPad you need to get the right elm327 plug in.

Post the codes once you have them and people will point you in the right direction. It could be many things, if been on lots of short journeys the DPF can throw a code but you won’t get other symptoms. EGR problems can causes hesitation, hard to start or put you in limp mode depending on whether it’s stuck open , stuck shut, in the middle or intermittent. If It is EGR I can advise on fitting new one as have done myself and it’s not uncommon for them to fail at around 50k miles on a 2.2. Lots on here on maf sensor cleaning and it’s easy, just use proper maf sensor cleaner.

I am back home this week and can take a look at the fault codes. Typically the engine management orange light is no longer lighting up when I drive the vehicle!!
I have purchased one of the cheap OBD Connect, fault code readers. Its the wi-fi one for use with an i-phone.
On the instructions it says to connect to an app of my choice with common choices being TORQUE-Dash Command-OBD Fusion-OBD Auto Doctor
Any suggestions which app suites the defender the best?

These are generic code readers so all much same, I have an Android phone but dash command on an iPhone should give you access to current and historic fault codes. Plus the ability to clear them once you have recorded them. That should give insight into what triggered the check engine light (CEL) / malfunction indication light (MIL) . If your light has cleared and not reappeared then it’s because your engine has run through several diagnostic cycles without the issue arising again, or arising insufficient times to trigger the CEL/MIL light to come on. Different faults have different trigger points. Some don’t trigger a CEL/MIL at all.
If you have had a lot of stop starts / short journeys many different components could have got a bit “ gunked up” ,then a long journey cleaned them out, hence the CEL/MIL not coming on again.

Once scanned post the codes on here, and anything you have felt seemed different when starting, driving etc and people will advise on the right order of things to check.

Ps don’t panic if there are lots of codes, lots of times they are old but not cleared at service intervals. When you have them recorded you can clear and then keep a regular check to see if any new ones appear, which can help identify an intermittent issue that points to a component degrading.

Can the engine management light be reset without the aid of a diagnostic tool? I read somewhere if the battery is disconnected and left for a while this works.

Fault codes
Well I finally got the code reader hooked up and the fault code was P0404 Exhaust Gas recirculation "A" Control Circuit Range / Performance.

The fault has self cleared. It was displayed as a "stored code" No pending codes and No permanent codes found.

Is there anything I should be doing to the EGR valve, or just leave it as it is at the moment?

I would leave for the moment but start to prepare for an EGR replacement at some point. look at the prices and sources for the part, understand the process and the tools required, and decide if it’s something you are happy to do or identify a few local independent defender garages and get a quotes for the work.

Note:- the egr valve on the 2.2 is made by pierburg, supplied to ford and has FOMOCO cast on it. If bought as a genuine landrover part all they have done is put it in a landrover box... and doubled the price to do so.
If you look at the valve you can see the pierburg part numbers on a labels on the side facing you as you look from the near side wing. I obtained a pierburg one direct for £99 inc postage.
A local defender specialist quoted 2 hours to fit.
I fitted myself, more as a challenge than a cost issue, all in all about 5 hours work, interspersed with a couple of hours of tea breaks to calm my frustration on how the limited space made a simple job so hard to do. I think I could do it in 2 hrs now.

So keep monitoring fault codes, listen out for the quite noisy cycle the egr valve goes through when the engine is switched off after most non short journeys. Noting it does not do it every time, but if it does not do it at all it’s a good sign the egr is failing. Look out for a slight hesitation / hiccup when pressing the accelerator after a gear change, or for the engine not starting first time . All are indicators the egr valve is not running smoothly and if it does fail in the wrong way it leaves you in limp mode, which you can clear with your scanner now but not ideal. If any of these symptoms happen then it’s time to change egr.

Thank you very much for the information. I expected that the part would have a Ford transit equivalent and be a lot cheaper!
I have only done 20k miles but the last year has been much shorter journeys and was expecting some sort of EGR issue to emerge. Im glad that this fault seems easy to fix and is not massively expensive.
I will replace the EGR valve myself so all advice most welcome.

The code reader is a handy tool so thanks for all the advice.

I think the engine light is on because there is some sort of a fault that needs fixing.

Removing the indicator is not fixing anything and (officially at least) any inspection would normally involve seeing all the lights illuminate in the startup test phase to ensure all fault indicators are working as it should.
