Looking for advice on choosing between two Puma's
Hi all, I'm looking for some advice!

I find myself in a bit of a conundrum and would love your insights while evaluating two Puma’s I’m considering to buy.

We’ll be buying the car to take on some long-haul trips starting in Europe and then either drive to Africa (if the instability in the middle east permits the crossing) or ship to South America.

I live in an area where the euro norms are quite strict, which means I'm limited to newer model Defenders (2.4 or 2.2) if I wish to get into the city.

Having scoured the market, I've narrowed down to two potential purchases:

Option 1: 2008 Model 2.4
Mileage: 180k kms.
Service History: Maintained by a Land Rover specialist for the last 80k kms. No service records before that.
Owners: 3 in total, with 2 having frequented the Land Rover dealer.
Euro Norms: Can currently access the city but might face restrictions post-2025.
Other details include:
Electric windows installed.
Track wideners.
Maintenance and replacements at various mileage points:
124k kms: Fuel tank hose and Ventilation hose.
141k kms: Battery replacement.
151k kms: Major service.
157k kms: Service
171k kms: Minor service.
Engine remaped.
Current State: Vouched for by the Land Rover garage. Appears clean inside, minimal rust, with minor cosmetic blemishes including some scratches and dents.
Price: 37,000 euro
Option 2: 2.4 Puma (2011 Model)
Euro Norm: Euro5, ensuring future city access.
Exterior: Immaculate.
Engine: Seems less used but hoses might've been replaced.
Red Flags: Some repainted side panels, a repainted roof, and a replaced rear crossmember.
Chassis: Retains its original stickers.
Service History: Only a major service 7k kms ago that covered extensive replacements and repairs. No other records.
Complete fluid replacement (all fluids).
Brake servicing.
Clutch replacement.
Replacement of a dented rear shock absorber.
Ball joint replacement due to play in the cardan joint .
Torn control arm bushings replacement.
Wheel bearing play adjustment.
Replaced axle shaft and hub cover due to play.
Replaced tank vent hose because of dryness cracks.
Windshield wipers replacement.
Bumper corner replacement.
axle suspension support
calibrating the steering correction of the drive line
Ownership: 12 dealership transfers and 4 owners. Has been for sale with various dealers over the last year.
Price: 41,000 euro
While Option 2 fits my requirements due to euro norms, the vehicle's murky service history, multiple ownership changes, and how long it has been on sale raise some red flags. Would an inspection by a Land Rover dealer be enough to feel confident about this vehicle?

Which Defender if either do you believe is the best option? Looking forward to your insights!

Unless there was a different European specification (and I don't think there was), the 2.4 was only ever Euro 4.

The 2.2 was introduced (with the DPF) for Euro 5 compliance.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

If option 2 is a 2.4 it won't be Euro 5.
Perhaps it's a 2.2 with DPF in which case it will be Euro 5, as you say its a 2011 model?

I went for a 2.2 for the Euro 5, but in the UK I can't drive into an increasing number of cities (without paying), as clean air zones here require Euro 6. So I might as well have gone for a 2.4.

It might be worth checking the Land Rover online service history site if you haven't already? Some of the service history for my defender is recorded online but its not in my service record book. (You need the VIN number to check a vehicle's service history - https://osh.landrover.com/service-history)

Hey both, thanks for responding!

I'm not sure to be honest, but I looked up the license plate in the government registry and it tells me it's euro 5. The dealer is stating it's a 2.4.

Either way, my question is: how concerned should I be about the service history? My preference would be to go for euro5.

Just had a look! Unfortunately couldn't find any service history (the car was imported a long time ago, that's probably why). However, it did confirm it's a 2.4!

Just a warning, there was recently a thread by a member also from the Netherlands who purchased a 2.2 that was ROW spec and hence Euro 4, but he paid for Euro5 as that what was stated in the documentation. Result is failed emissions. So check everything very carefully. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Was it not for the tighter emissions control on the 2.2, it would be a reliable lump (perhaps without the variable oil pump).
It is much easier and cheaper to make a 2.2 with similar emissions as a 2.4 than a 2.4 with the emissions of a 2.2. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The way the world is going, its EU6 you need to ensure city access. Glasgow's LEZ now and the rest of Scotland's cities follow next year, totally ban less than EU6, you cant even pay to go in. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

Here we are good to around 2030, so I'm fine taking that risk. Given that, what would be your choice between the two?

Because prices are now dropping and there will be better ones available, for instance my 2011 1 owner 50k miles unmarked 90xs SW dinitrolled from new with no damage 50k miles is not worth 41k euros.

And there have been several really nice ones on here recently much newer and cheaper, appreciate you may want a lhd one and prices in Europe may be higher.

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Just to confirm - the NL emissions database is indeed not always correct: my 2011MY 2.4 130 shows on the RDWdata website as euro5 - which it certainly is not.
