Cutting oil

I know cutting oil must be specifically formulated for the job but if I wanted to drill into a Defender bumper and had no cutting oil to hand would engine oil or gear oil do as a substitute? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I don’t know about gear or engine oil, but WD40 works ok in a pinch. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

engine oil or gear oil works well for hand drilling or pillar drilling in an old fashioned oil can...

And like WD40 I do have engine oil and gear oil to hand.....

You're very unlikely to need cutting oil at all on something as insubstantial as a front bumper, but as above there are many substitutes which can be used if you want.

Eh, just out of curiosity of course. If cutting all were needed in an emergency, I am told Anne Summers stock "lubricating oil". Would that do? And no, unlike WD40, engine oil and gear oil I do not have that on my work bench.. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

It would be OK at the front for spotlights.

For a tow bar you'd need booty lube.......

Given I drilled through my 12mm thick rear cross member with a 13mm drill with no lube I doubt you're going to need it

No pilot drill either, well it was sort it built in being a Dewalt Extreme 2 drill bit. Those things are great for thick steel! Ed

So no lube needed, just grind away...

Stop for a break now and then if things get hot?
Better remember to tell the Mrs, "Don't touch that, it might be hot after all of that grinding".
So after a short break I'll be ready to resume. As things will .have cooled down I'll be able to tell the Mrs, "Hold that while I get it centred". Oh and no hammer action, just a steady grind. Yep think I have it now. I'll let you know how I get on.... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
