If you are thinking about using wi-fi calling on your mobile, just check that it can be enabled first.

We have a number of sim free unlocked 1 year old Android phones and even though they support wifi calling they won't work with 3 or O2 wi-fi calling as they don't have 3 or O2 firmware loaded on them. I haven't looked into the possibility of loading the dedicated firmware however.

I have a similar unit from 02. They call it a boostbox.
Had to switch to a business contract to get it, but the contract rates are still the same.
It's fully supported and I've had mine for years without a problem.
If Vodafone can't help. I'm sure 02 can.

I can second the O2 box. Mine must be nearly 10 years old and still going strong. Minor issue at the moment is that my house can just about get a weak 4G signal, so my phone prefers to have an unusable 4G signal rather than a strong 3G. Solution is to disable 4G while at home, but still a pain.

Can I suggest in that case that you switch from using SMS to a data connection-based messaging service such as WhatsApp or the like? They work very well now. If you're paranoid about your privacy there are a number of more anonymous platforms apparently - my sons and I use one called Discord for that reason. They also offer a great deal more functionality, should that be of interest.

Yes i have been using whatsapp a bit more now, but not all our contacts use it Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the link to Discord, is that like a different version of whatsapp where both parties have to be on it ? Thumbs Up

Thank you all for the reply's and food for thought Thumbs Up 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Discord for me works as a group chat, where I can talk to one or both sons at once - it's good for organizing them (they're both at college / Uni) and also i'm rather forced into it as it is their platform of choice.

For the majority of my contacts though we use WhatsApp because it also has the voice and video calling option, and also works with the Facebook portal which we have for my little girl to enable communication with the overseas in-laws.

TBH WhatsApp is pretty flawless as long as you're not too bothered about the ultimate security of your info - that said if "they" want to know what you're saying they'll find out one way or t'other....

Jamie, can you post which unit you used please?

@ JST.... it was this one we used. I think the chap I did the job for can get them for ~ £140 each

Found them on ebay UK (as opposed to waiting for one from Chinistan or Russia) ebay link

So just to update everyone . . .

The route i have gone is due to covid-19 so i have gone and bought a new sure signal and vodafone registered it which was great as it was a gamble whether they would or not. I have got a good signal again and the plan is sometime next year when this covid-19 is sort of gone away and were back to some sort of normality, i will get someone into put a proper signal box in and thank you to everyone with there reply's Thumbs Up 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. If it works, then i would not bother at all. Our Signal can be bit funny too, which is down to the router i think. I could research on getting a better router etc, but i am not going bother, my mum would have to bell them etc. Plus the PC that i use it hardwired Very Happy Yeah i still use a proper PC and Wired. The PC was built by Proctor Workstations oddly enough Shocked Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Mainly Procta as one day you will not be able to use them as they are for 3G and at the moment 5G is getting better Thumbs Up 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Since i have been into the computers, Networking tech has really blew out far and wide now, in these last 20 years. I remember back at school, computers were physically linked with a Coax and modems were dialup. In a few years time, i would say the standard RJ45 cable will be a lot lesser on new systems etc. Someone asked on a facebook group if dial up is still used in the world, and it just say is still to a certain degree, But i think that will change when 5G really goes hot.
Virgin will no doubt send a replacement line or something but then again we still use the old Coaxal line, which will have its limits, we need fibre optic if anything. Thumbs Up
