52HG25 lightweight series 3
Well as if 2 defenders, 1 90 and a disco 3 weren’t enough green ovals in my life I finally have fulfilled two dreams in one today, own a leaf sprung Land Rover and own a lightweight, talking to a friend he had lost interest in owning it due to a rough gearbox and a few other mechanical problems he wanted it gone, the price he asked was so good I agreed to purchase it for my fleet, now I just have to build a carport for her Rolling with laughter

So here is 52HG25 as I picked her up today, she needs some parts to bring her back to military specs but that is something to happen over a while not an requirement straight away, with the summer coming and Guernsey getting the Covid-19 under control we should soon be allowed to enjoy summer days and evenings with the canvas off and a nice sunset in view Thumbs Up

Cheers guys Thumbs Up

The vent panel was extremely rotten so the PO had this plain one made and the old brackets cut off the original and welded to this one, did he remember to remove all the brackets/ fly screens etc? No did he Censored Banging Head Banging Head more to add to the list of a new one then.

Well after owning her for a few days and bleeding the brakes twice they still needed a double pump to get them to work correctly, the po said he had redone all the brakes a month or so ago, so with that knowledge a full strip down revealed a common mistake of reassembly.

As you can hopefully see the spring has been connected between the two shoes apposed to the leading show and the pin on the back plate. This can cause a “spongy” brake pedal feeling, also the adjusting cams on 3 of the wheel stations had been hacksawed off and replaced with an aftermarket kit that was also incorrectly fitted causing the shoes to bind on the backplate and drum.

With the brakes apart and finding an old tin of calliper paint this made sense.

Now the brakes are working well, onto the engine it’s a little sluggish to start and cuts out every now and then, well the original battery it came with was a gel battery that had m6 fixing so an extended bolt with penny washers made the connection Rolling Eyes so a rummage at the back of the shed found this:

The fuel issue turned out to be a slight seep from the lift pump to carb, a quick nip with the spanner and a little fettle of the idle adjustment and I’ve got a sewing machine under the bonnet Cool Very Happy

With all that work done it’s definitely time for her to earn her keep:

So the next few things to do, get a correct vent panel, find some S3 wheels or later defender steels, get the correct 7 leaf springs then some paint to get rid of the horrible ww2 American green paint (back to good old NATO green/black) oh and continue the search for a whole host of other parts Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Decent vent panels are fetching strong money at the moment, even rotten ones are getting a couple of hundred quid.

When I bought 05KD65, the vent panel end was rotten. There is a chap on facebook who does fantastic repairs at really reasonable rates, search for "The Welding Wood".

Thumbs Up Cheers for the heads up camelman, I have been able to acquire a rotten one off an old friend who is doing up a Dutch lightweight as he was given a new one with the buy. Not sure where it was from but didn’t look bad. The only problem is £700 for a new one is nearly the same as a whole bulkhead Shocked

Excellent lightweight btw, what’s the history behind it? I assume there is a thread I have missed Embarassed 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

05KD65 was the last lightweight registered with the military (in 1985) and spent 10 years with the Red Arrows being sold to its previous owner (who didn't know it was the last one....)

I've owned 05KD63 for 15 years and spent a couple of years looking for this one.
It popped up on ebay a couple of years back and only 1 other person bid on it Smile

Currently stripped down while I rebuild her.
