Is it worth pushing the cv back on again, give it a good clout?
It may relocate so you can try again?

Yes, remove and discard the spacer between the bearings and discard the stake nut. Instead use two flat nuts with the correct tab washer between them.

When reassembling with the two nut system you do not (of course) tighten the nuts stupid tight as you do with the spacer. Tighten the first just enough to eliminate end float on the bearings, then lock with the out nut and check how freely the hub spins. You will often find that the second nut pinches up the bearings due to slop on the threads, in which case release both nuts and try again with the inner nut slightly slacker. The aim is to get the hub to spin freely with zero end float when the lock nut is tight. When it is correct, bend the tab washer over one flat of the lock nut.

a bit off topic for this thread but relates to swivel joint

i have just had to shell out £560 to get a swivel joint replaced after it took a heavy knock from a large stone whilst out laning.

it left a big dent in the swivel housing and ripped the seal. Has anybody come across a way of protecting the swivel more when
offroad? quite new to green lanes - does this happen often? the lanes are very rocky up here?

In several decades of driving and working with and on Landrovers, I have never seen or heard of that happening, although I'm sure that it has. My suggestions would be picking you route more carefully, and be more aware of what is under the car.

Hmm interesting - thank you

was expecting just to have the seal replaced as it was leaking heavily, but the garage doing the work said it was badly dented and needed replacing. Sad

yes its sounds i was unlucky- why do swivel housings have to be replaced if not damaged? do they corrode. i see most repairs are just kits replacing the internals

^^^ Pitting most commonly, and wear from the seal sweeping the surface.
