Hog ring or detention pin what do you have🤔

Generally ring up to 1/2" drive, above that I prefer pin.

I’ve both. Prefer the hog ring, works well on my Milwaukee. I managed to break the pin on my dewalt and it’s no where near as powerful as the Milwaukee.

I hate to be pedantic but I'm not sure that the retaining ring you're referring to is a hog ring. A hog ring is a connector used to fasten materials together using special pliers and is normally a permanent or semi permanent fixture.

and so does Mr Milwaukee. Like Blackwolf I prefer ring and pin for 3/4 drive and spring ring for 1/2" drive Defender 90XS SW

My reasoning is that a pin is more secure. Having seen sockets come off impact wrenches more than once, if you are hit by a 3/8" or 1/2" square drive socket it will hurt but is unlikely to maim. A 1" square drive socket is quite likely to inflict life-changing injuries, and is far too heavy in my opinion to rely on spring ring for retention.

I am not aware that spring ring is even an option above 1" square drive, the only system I have seen in 1.1/2" or above is the retaining pin.
