Failed clutch switch can cause bizarre effects, but usually is immediately under acceleration combined with gear shifts.
Worth checking if nothing better else.
This is with the Puma, not sure about TD5. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Sorry to sound a little harsh but your garage sounds like it needs to do a little research into Td5's and the diagnostics of these engines with comments like: Garage said I have unrelated fault codes that wont clear (air con for example even though dont have air con) and suggests this means either ECU (been checked) or oil in engine loom

The first thing that I would have done in this situation is to replace the injector seals and washers, many problems can disappear straight away, failing that be looking at fuel pressure and pay attention to the fuel pressure valve and perhaps do a replacement of the seals and valve.

The main thing would be injector seals and washers then see how it performs after that Thumbs Up

Thanks, its not gear change related.

Appreciate the tips of where to look next.

Simply chucking in a new engine loom is eye wateringly expensive when it cant be pinpointed to be that. I am no expert but not clueless with cars and intuition tells me it feels something maybe more mechanical that is stopping fuel at light acceleration than wiring loom signal faults.

Clutch pressure sensor (not switch) caused all sorts of problems in my Puma (suddenly wouldn't accelerate, then fine for a bit...) no fault codes as the car just thought I was playing with the clutch. May be worth checking... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Ok, thanks,
Looks like course of action is
change injector seals
then fuel pressure checking
then clutch sensor / switch

At least it will keep me busy while at home !

Sham you’re quite far from me or you could’ve borrowed my pressure testing kit I just bought to try and get mine running recently.

I plugged mine into a nanocom the other day for the first time after buying it in the group buy, it had the same error about a/c, yet mine runs a smooth as you like. So I’d ignore that,

strange, I just got my nanocom too and I also have an error code fan air conditioning! while I don’t have the A/C!

Dexterdog, for your problem you wouldn’t have sludge in your fuel tank? time belongs to those who know how to take it

The guys who did the remap have been brilliant. They have said the error codes are on almost every defender (inc air con) they see, hence they are sceptical about the oil in the loom suggestion by the garage.

Marlbare, not sure about sludge in tank, can I ask some more pls.......

When it started it was only when engine was cold, once it got up to temp it went away. Now its much more often and at any temp of engine when it does it (but much more likely before engine warmed up) but only ever under light acceleration (in any gear when it does it). Would that be sludge in tank issue ? And how can I check, is it a tank out job ?

Anyone got any views on whether the accelerator pedal might be knackered ? For example if the signal was breaking down when the pedal was at a certain position, hence the light acceleration being the problem ?

I have a puma 2.4 as well. I assume its a different pedal, anyone know ?(I could swap it otherwise)

My Disco 2 did exactly this once, as the TPS started to fail. Jiggling the pedal would cause the MIL to come on and the car to go into limp mode. It was fine on full throttle, just a big hiccup around mid position. I became a dab hand at turning off the ignition and resetting the limp mode whilst still rolling (I don't recommend this however as it is very easy to activate the steering lock). Changing the pedal assembly (an absolute pig of a job on a Disco!) fixed it.

There were stored DTCs as the individual throttle pot tracks were not reading correctly (my 2002 Disco has the three-channel pedal, not the earlier two channel version).

Thanks Blackwolf,

How do I tell which track pedal I have? Its a 2001 TD5 defender.

Long shot I know but do you know if the puma TDCI pedal different ? I have one I could use. Just trying to reduce costs with the "guess what the problem is and change things scenario"

Cheers

If the pedal fails it lights the dash warning light.

If the pedal fails completely it certainly will, but on my Disco 2 (which I know may be different to a Defender) it only did so if I jiggled the pedal rapidly to generate a lot of faults in a short time.

I'm afraid offhand I don't know if the TD5 and TDCi pedals are the same, but if they are they'll have the same part number.
