TD5 Def oil filter...
This might be an odd post but...

Im always reading about TD5 owners hating doing oil changes because its so difficult to get to the main oil filter...
Im really confused because after putting it off, I drained my engine, took off the centrifuge/rotor housing, swapped that out in a minute or two. And then moved onto the main filter, could barely see it from underneath the car where I thought it would be coming out from. So popped up top, realised it was right by the turbo. Got 1 hand behind the turbo and one in from the left near the centrifuge and just unwound it. A little tight but could get both hands on it so it just came out easy. A little drip from angling it to remove it. Cleaned up, lubed seal on new filter and put it straight on the thread, wound it on nice and tight, job done.

I'm wondering what is normally tripping people up?!

People often over tighten them. Making a 5 min job take potentially hours. Happened to me first time I serviced my 110, never happened since. Instagram @defender_ventures

i use one of the filter spanners, makes doing it up and removing it dead easy (as long as you have a genuine or OE shape filter) especially when the engine is still warm.

They are fine to do as long as they arent over tightened by previous installer! Cheers

I do mine up hand tight and I can normally undo it with my hands too. Even when I got the vehicle the previous owner must have done the same as I managed to undo it with my hands.

That makes more sense, thanks for the clarity, I guess as long as it's been serviced and tightened properly rather than brutally, it should be fine, otherwise a little awkward.
That said it's not hard to drop the downpipe which I guess would make it pretty easy to rectify. Im just happy to have an easy job for a change!

Someone mentioned the oil filter tool, I forgot that id ordered a td5 one and have it in the toolbox just in case Confused

I don't really think that the problem is how tight it is but more how much off a mess it can become. I normally thighted it by hand but need my tool to get it loose,
But as soon as I "broke"it loose I put a small plastic bag around the filter to catch the oil that come out. I like to change the oil when the oil is nice and warm. Roel

What I do also, is put a plastic bag under /on the filter when undoing it , that way when it’s unscrewed and tipped to remove it from the car it doesn’t drop oil everywhere, as the bag catches it,
I also use filters that I can use the correct oil filter spanner on ( mine was from twisted but I’m guessing many make them now,
Thumbs Up

Love the bag tip.. I've never managed to remove a filter yet from my V8 without pouring ALL the oil down my arm

I do mine by hand. I did have a issue once with a man filter that was slightly longer than the rest I've had. It was hard to get in position and start on the threads.
That was a one off though 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

The genuine Land Rover oil filter has a non return valve in it, and hardly any oil leaks out when you remove it.

Other oil filters l’ve used make a right mess as half the oil pours out when you tip the filter sideways to get it out from under the turbo.
