Wheel arch shelf?
Hi folks, new to forum having just got my first defender Very Happy

Looking for ideas on levelling off the load space above arches in my puma 90?

Don't particularly want to fork out for a drawer system, and most would be too short for my needs, as I want to be able to store rifles underneath. Are there any options out there to buy just a board levelling off across wheel wells, maybe with a central support for strength? Idea is to have dog box sitting on top, with the underneath area for storage. I'm no fabricator, so pre-made is best!

Cheers

I did that. A couple of lengths of steel box across with marine ply over them. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Hi if you feel you don’t have the skill set to make it, have a chat with a carpenter or kitchen fitter, ask for a list of timber etc he will need and let them make it for you Thumbs Up good luck. 2015 HT XS 90

Trailer board is probably most suitable, and if you can use a saw you should be able to do it yourself, or as suli says, get a joiner to cut it down. A big measurement though is the size of your rifle. My 26” barrelled X Bolt is no where near fitting lengthwise on the floor of my 90 and is mounted higher up. You might get away with something 20” ish.

If by any chance you travel to Yorkshire, I’d be more than happy to cut it down for you with the tracksaw.

This is what I did, 3 sections of I think they call it furniture board at homebase, then a section of L plate metal cut down and stuck to each end. Very easy to take in and out as needed.

It made the back a lot more practical for shopping etc and very strong, after putting the front seats down my girlfriend and I spend a night sleeping on top of it with an inflatable mattress with no problems!

I later covered it in automotive carpet so it didn't look so homemade but then put bench seats in the back so don't really use it much anymore. It also had the added benefit of deadening the sound coming from the back slightly.

I did it with a piece of ply and auto carpet. Plenty strong enough. It usually has a transk9 box sat on it.

Better pics.
Point to note. Dogs can get in and out when box sits on the floor. The old man needs help when it’s up higher.

The odd pics are details of how it is secured using roof hooks to load securing rings. I wanted to be able to remove it and leave no trace it was ever there.

This is one a friend has done to his 90,
its all dynamat underneath as well.
home made side panels work well
not sure on the dark head liner and back door but its a fair bit of work and is a tidy job.

the drawer doesn't take a massive weight on its current rollers but does work well. the open side takes his camping chairs and bits.

its coming out on Monday as he has traded upto a 110 and will be making something new for that one/

Another issue mine has thrown up is that heavy objects are now at tub side height. I am aware that if they slide and hit it they will dent the sides above the wheel tubs but below the body capping
