2000 TD5 Diff Lock questions, have searched
I’m a new Defender owner, a 110 TD5 2 Door, the car was bought from the original owners, who have done 164k miles, and have never had diff lock engaged, all of the linkages seem to be operating as they should, but difflock won’t engage.

Can the shift fork seize inside the case ?

I will clean and lubricate the linkages as a matter of course regardless.

Also, when I’m in diff open, the diff lock light is ON, when I move the lever left to try to lock the diff, the light extinguishes,
Can anyone shed any light on either of my issues ?

Thanks in advance
Mike

First thing first..... does the diff lock actually engage?
Jack up one wheel drivers front is usually easiest with the diff lock not engaged, the wheel should spin freely.
Now engage the difflock and spin the wheel, it should not turn, only a little bit until the slack in the driveline is take up.

If it is as above then the difflock is working as it should.

It is very u likely that the fork has seized internally as it is constantly lubricated when moving.
Do you know to the best of your knowledge or did they say if the transmission had been out of the vehicle?

Try the above and we can go from there. Hold my beer and watch this!

Hello mate thanks for the reply,
They didn’t mention the transmission ever being removed but obviously that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been.
I have tried what you said, the diff lock doesn’t engage.

Yes, unfortunately it is entirely possible for the internal parts of the difflock mechanism to seize, and since the selector fork is sprung against the actuating mechanism (it has to be this way) it is possible to have the situation whereby the linkage appears to work OK but nothing happens inside the box.

Unfortunately it is not easy to diagnose or fix with the transfer box in the vehicle.

Took the tunnel out, took off the linkage for the diff lock and removed the actuating arm with the 3xm6 bolts , freed up the detent shaft inside and cleaned and greased all of the linkages to the lever.

We have working diff lock !
