2.4 Puma noise on startup (sound + video)
Hi everyone, first post on here!

Finally got my dream Defender but there is a strange noise on a cold startup, somewhere between a scrape and a knock? It doesn’t happen if the engine is warmed up.

Perhaps its worth noting that the ABS will occasionally come on intermittently after driving 30+ miles.

I took a rather bad video, you can hear the noise at 8 seconds

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

congrats! Hard to make out. Do you mean the short noise when you tilt the phone?

(also takes a bit too long to start IMHO)

I get the same noise, so while I can’t offer a solution at least you have company. Mine’s a 2010 and I’ve owned it for just over a week. Loving it despite the noise after start up

do the clutch rattle test, could just be the clutch springs settling down.

start the car in neutral without the clutch depressed, press the clutch if there is a rattle that disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed the clutch springs are probably loose, this is most noticeable in a garage or next to a wall.

clutches can rattle for ages without causing any issues, however some get that bad the springs come out and damage other bits DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

I can't hear anything unusual, I think you're a bit oversensitive. There are lots of brackets, shields and the like attached to the engine and gear boxes which may give a rattle here and there.

But I agree with the above posters: your starter needs a bit long to kick the engine, my 2010 Puma starts after half your revolutions even at 3°C. When was the last time your filters (fuel&air) have been changed?

Thanks for all the replies everyone, it turns out when the noise occurs on start my brake pedal vibrates with it so probably ABS.

As for the long start, yeah I’m going to swap out the filters as im not sure when they were last changed. Also will check the battery level

That really sounds like you need a new battery or starter! It's turning over slowly, should be starting after fewer turns and shouldn't be obviously slowing down after such a short time cranking.
