Avoid the school holiday season. NC500 route wonderful scenery but spoilt by amount of traffic.

Hi, a it late in replying to this, but I've just seen it and it sounds like you're planning in advance.

If you're looking for spectacular scenery and somewhere with a different feel, then the West coast is my favourite area to visit. Anywhere from Campbeltown to Ullapool. There's also something special about getting on a ferry and going to an island. Anywhere up there will have an unhurried, laid back feel compared to what most of us live with every day.

Favourite places for me,
Isle of Arran. Island feel, but not too far away and access to pubs and restaurants if you want that. Mountains in the North, moorland in the middle, farms and coastal scenery in the South. Ancient Neolithic standing stones at Machrie moor.

Isle of Mull. Tobermory has a great feel in the summer, especially if the regatta is in town. Lots of places to eat and drink -Cafe Fish, the Mishnish. Visit Iona and the Abbey - very special.

Plockton. Lovely little place, very chilled. Palm trees on the harbour side! Handy for a trip to Skye too.

Isle of Barra. Very special, remote feeling place. Castlebay, wow. Worth a trip out to the airport just to see a plane land on the beach.
Then if you're out that far why not follow the chain of islands all the way, Vatersay, Eriskay, the Uists, Benbecula, Harris and Lewis. The stones at Calanish, Carloway Broch and Arnol Black House will take you through 5000 years of history in a day.

I'm off for a pre-Christmas weekend in Glasgow and a few days on Loch Awe soon, can't wait.
If you've never been, the summer months would be best, to make use of the long days.
Orkney is also highly recommend, great mix of ancient and modern (20th C) history.
Enjoy Thumbs Up

Hello,

Speak to Ian at Highland all terrain- he can organise trips on some stunning estates with moderate offroad. Perfect for a standard vehicle.

Regards

Chris

Watching this keenly.

Am planning a little jaunt around the NC500 in a couple of weeks time. A bit of chilly wild camping in an artic sleeping bag on the roof tent and a couple of AirBnb/hostel scenarios.

I think it's going to be anticlock. Friend coming over tomorrow for us to draw up all the things we want to divert to see on the way. Mostly going to be on the roof tent with a couple of Air BnB or hostel jobbies. Potentially a bothy for a night too. Planning on 2 nights at the top tip just in case we get a clear sky...

So excited.

We pack the vehicle tomorrow and leave on Sat early AM.
First trip Basingstoke - Loch Lomond and work around from there, 8 days, 1 return travel stop off at Lake Windermere on the way back.
So much stuff planned and GPSed to go and see and hopefully we end up getting to those Bothys too. Some nights we are planning either roof tent or bothy depending on what happens.

Many pics and a video to come.
