Remember the Darien Gap expedition? A proper Land-Rover had to be flown in to "path-find" for the Rangies. No way would the new thing survive the treatment that Land-Rover soaked up!

Here is a little about the crossing. The "proper" Land Rover was purchased locally ...second hand. The Range Rover diffs had a hard time.

Wasn't that more down to the huge tyres and wheels BS put on the RRs? I seem to recall he was told there would be issues before hand, wouldn't listen and then when progress was really slow had to go to a new plan.

ISTR the diff problems were attributed to the oversize 'swamper' tyres that were fitted with for that stretch of the journey. Darren

Darien Gap expedition is worthy of a thread all of it's own ~ it certainly was a major influence in my automotive life.

These were those infamous tyres:

and the second hand vehicle they bought in country ~ and didn't look after very well:

Loving the front bumper:

Off to see if I have a book, video, or other bits and bobs about the expedition.

Both of the Range Rovers still exist, one part of the Dunsfold Collection and one at Gaydon:

A quick root around in my book shelf & quickly located my lovely copy of the expedition; in 1972 I was still at secondary school & I remember my Dad getting this after a visit to the Dutton Forshaw Land Rover dealer in Preston when he was trying to trade his IIA in for a S3 County...whilst searching for this I also found my copy of the 'Hawkwind Log'...I suspect only a few on this forum will know what I'm referring to!!!!

I, like Supacat & others attribute this & my Dad's love of Land Rover's for over 40 years of errr joyful (at times) Land Rover ownership...

I thought I'd read somewhere that all the work LR did on the diffs of the rangies, is what resulted in the "4 pinion" HD diff?

I could be wrong though.

The 'Hawkwind Log' was a sleeve insert booklet from the album 'In search of space' by the band Hawkwind in 1971...

I really must get a life!

Many thanks for the answer Thumbs Up

I thought it was to do with the band Hawkwind, not 100% sure so had to make sure as they were an awesome band and saw them live a few times and got an album or two Wink 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Is that a LR pamphlet? Any chance of uploading the other side/other pages?
