New Defender’s Missing Important Tech for the 2020s
The New Defender showcases several new tech items for JLR but surely they missed on one extra that many many people look to fit these days - front and rear dash cams. Surely with all the cameras fitted as standard and all the computing ability it wouldn’t have been too hard to add a recording function and memory to the surround cam system - a sort of venture cam for the 2020’s instead of the 1980’s. Just imagine the mark up they could have for electronically inserting a digital Land Rover signature to the video as well! When your New Defender has been stolen a ‘see through’ bonnet or clearview rear view mirror isn’t much use but cams that communicates with your Land Rover app could well be. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Second battery and solar for me.

I agree with you regarding the cameras though I am not into social media but it would make sense in the new customer world JLR are living in.

i agree about the dash cams, but they are not alone. is there a reason why this is still left to the aftermarket in this era when car manufacturers seem hell bent on putting all sorts of electronics in their product?

EV or at least PHEV option at time of launch is the most glaring error.

Zed I completely agree, huge opportunity missed especially when there are already 2 PHEVs in the Range Rover family that are proven (and it seems popular) and that there is a hugely successful BEV in the Jaguar family Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Saw that article, or at least a similar one, a few days ago and it made me think that there's obviously some big internal fights going on in JLR at the moment.

Someone else referenced one regarding the new Defender, and now this. JLR have already announced to investors that all models are to migrate to the BEV ready platform by 2026 but this appears to muddy the waters?

Sign of some creative tensions or just more trouble ahead?

Interesting to see this company has a working electric G Wagon:

https://www.kreiselelectric.com/projekte/electric-g-klasse/

"The all-wheel electric drive in the Electric G-Class offers full off-road capability with maximum driving pleasure. Two electric motors generate a max. Power of 360kW and provide for an acceleration otherwise known only from sports cars - despite 2.6t curb weight. All this with particularly compact dimensions and without restrictions in the loading and interior space."

as well as a few other interesting vehicles.

Re: New Defender’s Missing Important Tech for the 2020s
There are cameras, and I'm sure an update can add the feature in the future. The question is will they? Once the car is stolen, I'd say a GPS tracking of the vehicle is much more important than recording of the camera. And they probably have that feature. Could be wrong.

Second battery and solar panels is something I'd leave for the aftermarket. You are looking at a very small number (less than 1%) that would want a second battery and solar panels.

@Supacat. You think it's JLR vs BMW? I know BMW has been in the hydrogen game for a good decade now.

I'm just Censored at JLR saying there will be a BEV Defender & doing a 180 with a reasoning that it doesn't make sense on such a large vehicle.

Nothing to do with the fact they have run out of cash for the development programme, and their new partner BMW have a hydrogen programme.

Spinning the facts rather than being honest?

It can be done, but when customer resistance prevented introduction. If the car can do it as stock, then insurance companies can reasonably expect a recording as evidence, rather than a customer electively providing it. Fair enough you might think, but then customer concern is that creep will happen: the 10 minutes before the crash will be accessed. Then the telemetry, then a driving history, then a driving rating, which could be used to reduce the insurance pay out etc etc.

Its big brother, independence issue. Its not one I share, but many do. JB

I don’t have dash cams on either of my cars for that reason and I often wonder when there has been an RTA how many people answer the request from investigating officers to forward dash cam footage - very few I suspect. There is no reason why it couldn’t be an option for those that want integrated systems rather than having to hack the interior of their new car to bit to fit an aftermarket system. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
