Netherlands 2004 Defender 110 Td5 SW Auto Zambezi Silver
I bought our def in 2015 with 158000 km’s
Its remapped directly.
Also removed egr, cat and a small flow silencer instead of the big factory one.
It had driven very smooth untill 1 injector broke.
This was 2,5 weeks ago.
The milage is now 149000. (238000 km’s)

After the replacement of the injector and the seals/washers of the other 4 the terrible noise starts.
I think now that it had something to do with the chain of the camshaft or the spanner/plastic slides.
I turned the crankshaft clockwise and anti clockwise to adjust the injectors.
Normaly the crankshaft only turns one way.
The test with the airco and steeringpump needs a little power, so the engine have to work a bit.
Maybe the force in the chain is a bit higher at that moment.

Did you check your oil pressure allready ?

Very similar modifications to mine. Obviously this has no bearing on the problem with our td5’s, just out of interest. Mainly mapping.

How mine started.. a regular 3k oil service, I removed the intake pipe to gain access to the centrifugal oil filter as I wanted to check the threads in the housing, on further inspection elsewhere I noticed the compressor wheel on the turbo had just started to score the housing.. nothing serious yet ! I decided to check the obvious, all ok. Oil pressure was also fine. (3k oil services I couldn’t understand). I replaced it with a brand new Garret turbo, along with feed and return pipes.. changed oil etc.

Anyway after this is when I noticed the “knock”?

Yours was the injector, Mario who also has the same problem was noticed after a head change!

Three different failures but the same problem as a result, maybe ?

I wouldn’t rule out checking the chain, but I’m not sure if that’s the culprit.

Oil pressure should be as follows.

Cold (idle) 3 bar. Mine was just under 4
3500 rev/min (hot) 1.5-3.0 bar

Always worth checking, just for piece of mind.

Hi, I'm Mario from another forum. Yes, I've changed the head with a new one from AMC and also refurbished my injectors. Additionally, I've replaced: hydraulic lifters, chain tensioner, fuel pump, glow plugs, oil pump, fuel pressure regulator and small cable loom.

My TD5 sounds like this cold:
https://youtu.be/SaSwRC0jBF0

And at operating temperatur:
https://youtu.be/CpBV_gZyx4k

I've also obsevered that the sound comes slowly at 75° coolant temperature. With a bit more rev, it's gone. I've also measured my cable loom with connected injectors which gives me something around 2 Ohm which is good. Another try was to disconnect injector by injector to detect the faulty one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55Kj82DkceI

From audio, it sounds like that injector 1 was the faulty one but I'm not sure when I've a look on the audio wave form...

I know two other people in Germany with same issue. One guy has recently got the car, so we didn't know what happened. The other one has overhauled the whole engine and also the injectors. His TD5 sounds like this:
https://youtu.be/iFAgJazeEQw

Like me, he tried another set of injectors and the knock is still there...

It's really strange...no smoke, engine is running, cylinder balance OK but this knock....

Welcome Mario!!

I was thinking about disconnecting the Coolant temperature sensor.. if the “knock” isn’t evident perhaps we could Eliminate a mechanical problem ??

I don’t mean it’s a CTS at fault, but if disconnected and running smoothly it would make me more inclined to swap the ecu. I can’t find one at the moment which I know is 100%

Hi Alex,

what is CTS?

I think disconnecting the coolant temperatur sensor should be also checked with cold operating temperate, because ECU uses a fallback value and we didn't know which one. So, it could be worst case 90° and ECU is trigger injectors like warm condition or it is using a lower value and trigger injectors like with cold engine... you know what I mean?

Best Mario

Sunday i made a trip to France. Driving 675 km’s om the highway.
I stopped every 200 km for listening to the engine turning at idle.
Couldn’t hardly believe it.... noise was much less after 400 km’s !
Tomorrow i will check again and make a video.
Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Maybe the long drive helped the new injector settle down ?

I hope it’s sorted.. let us know !

I got the information that injectors didn't settle down. They are working - or not.

Yesterday we made our trip back to home.
The Def did a very good job after 2 times app 680 km’s
Fuelconsumption was 1 liter on 8,7 km’s, very good for an automatic 🤗👍🏻
The knacking sound is still there but not so loud as in the beginning right after the replacement of the fuelinjector.
What to do or check ? I don’t know......

I believe Mario: a fuelinjector is working or not and with a roughness on the Hawkeye it seems that the dieselinjection is oké.

Paul, I have the same noise on my Td5 as in your first video! I haven’t got a clue how long it’s been making this noise for. Possibly for the entire time I’ve had the vehicle. Having spent a week around two other Td5s I thought mine sounded different at idle slightly. The vehicle performs beautifully and for 152,000 miles it’s about as tight as one with 52,000 miles. So I’m at a loss as well Neutral Charlie

Hi

It seems a few do it!

I’m leaning towards the DMF or bearing. So I’m doing mine soon. It’s done 80k now and does growl in the morning when cold.

Has your’s ever been done ?

Checks if the noise come and goes when depressing the clutch. The knocking in mine increases when the pedal is half depressed.
