Wales 2007 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Galway Green
Door Hinges (front) corrosion
I'm looking to replace the front door hinge securing screws with Marine Grade Stainless as I'm having some respraying done to the panels that are in need of repair and would like these hinges painted at the same time. I replaced the screws to the bonnet hinges and all those on the rear door and fittings on the rear 4 years ago and these are all bright and shiny with no dissimilar metal corrosion around these fixings to date.
I need to find out the size and length of the front door hinge screws (door and pillar side). They look about M8 size but I cannot easily remove them to check size and length as I don't have a suitable impact driver. The spray shop will have the means to remove and replace I'm sure but Id like to supply them a set of stainless fixings in readiness.

There are plenty of suppliers out there that have dedicated packs of stainless bolts and fixings for all round the vehicle I bought mine from Brendan at 4x4 Overlander and it was a comprehensive kit. Well worth the effort changing them Thumbs Up 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

To certainly long term avoid any bi-metal corrosion make sure your body shop use plenty of a good quality and non hardening anti corrosion paste. My recommendation is either of the two below, with the second one having the advantage of being totally metal free.

Last suggestion, I would recommend to again take all the already installed SS screws out again and dip them generously in this Weicon paste before reinstalling. If you do one bolt in/out at the time, you won’t disturb any door alignment. Easy do it yourself job. Thumbs Up

Thank you Eric. That's excellent info and top recommendations.

I've not used the weicon paste before so I'll look to get some quickly even if it's a week or so later after fitting the screws. I'd agree that a totally non metallic paste would be the best choice to minimise galvanic corrosion issues. "You are never to old to learn something new"

I have a Defender 90 TDCI and therefore only 3 door. For simplicity the Front Doors require M8x1.25 x 55 long screws (8 off total) for the Door side of the hinges and these also need M8 Nyloc Nuts and plain washers inside the door. The Post side of the hinges need M8x1.25 x40 long screws (8 off total). It seems the rear cab doors on a 5 door model need the longer 85 and 95 mm long screws on the post side but I'm unable to confirm this.

The kits you can buy all seem to supply A2 grade stainless screws but I used A4 Marine grade with the same tensile rating. If you spend a lot of time near the coast the A4 (316 grade stainless) are much more resistant to corrosion. "You are never to old to learn something new"
