by the previous year's model and see as much as 50% Off. If you do go down this route, bare in mind that ebikes are evolving faster than any segment of the bike industry so in just a year there can be a real leap in tech.

That's the limbo I often find myself in - laptops, cameras, phones & now ebikes - I get anxious that next year's model will be loads better, I get pre-FOMO, and end up not buying anything! Embarassed

I converted an old mountain bike using a Bafang 250W crank drive kit with 15Ah battery, was about £650 for the kit. Used it for my daily commute last winter and put over 2000miles on it. It worked really well and was very reliable, it certainly took the edge of rainy headwinds. Liked it so much I'd often take the scenic route home through the forest. Once in the snow it was fantastic, using the throttle I could climb slippery sections, wheel spinning and fishtailing the back end that would have been impossible without the motor.

Sorry about that. Happens all the time that I’m overtaking those Eddy Merckx and Rik Van Looy wannabes in their tight Lycra’s with my 14 speed Rohloff geared - https://www.rohloff.de/en/products/speedhub/ -350W Flyer touring bike. Most of them say friendly hello, but indeed there are a few others who really get angrily frustrated. These will stand up on their pedals, working their butt off to prove themselves, but almost never they can keep up with me. It always amazes me how many of those pro lookalikes still bike without helmets.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Hi Caterham

Check out The Bike Pilot's You Tube Channel

The above link is for the first instalment.

They rode the Coast to Coast on the current Specialized Levo Expert / S Works. Carbon and 700WH batteries. I cant remember the weight of those bikes, but lighter than mine.

Funny enough the downhill bikes in the 90's were not far off weight wise to the higher end MTB eBikes of today

One on gate I had to get over I just took the battery out as it saves weight and my back. So ways and means.

I am thinking of swapping from mountain bike to electric mountain bike, but struggle with the idea that they only assist up to 15mph. That’s very slow isn’t it? Are you all derestricting them?

You can de-restrict them but

1 It is illegal to use on the public highway in the UK (like electric scooters).
2 It will invalidate any manufacturers warranty.
3 Most shops will not service modified bikes.

Any way 15 mph is fast enough to go up hills and you can also peddle faster down hill. Managed to get mine up to 33 mph in the New Forest last year going down hill!!! Cheers Don.

An average speed of 15mph using your legs wouldn't be bad going at all.
If an electric assist helped me maintain that speed i'd be more than happy to be honest.

Around here in the depth of N.Wales, I used to average a speed of around 13mph mostly due to the steep inclines everywhere you go and I wasn't hanging about !

Coming off a bike at 8-9mph hurts, coming off at 15 mph is very painful on a rough track, any faster and you’ll need the What Three Words app for the air ambulance to locate you after coming off the bike out in the wilds Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Mr. Green

yep minute 7 to 8 just reinforces my opinion Thumbs Up

would rather spend the money on extra carbon fibre, Di2 gears and less weight Very Happy
but as I've said before - everyone to their own and horses for courses.

Posted this on the 'Pilgrims' thread but basically its then classed the same as a motorised scooter

"At which point I'm led to believe they are basically classed as a moped and you need licence/ insurance / etc ???"

Small country lanes for the start, then off onto byways, and paths off road.

The swap for me is due to
1 not using the bike. Only about 6 times since buying it
2 got motorhome, so want, a chance to get somewhere without getting a sweat on.

I’m fit, so have been poo pooing electric bikes, but everyone says that they are fantastic, and I do think it would work well with MoHo. Wiff wants me to buy two tiny folding electric bikes, Brompton type things, but I can’t get any interest in them, and they ain’t cheap anyway.
