Manchester - travel to
hi there,

just wondering if anyone can advise best travel arrangements.
I'm off to Manchester tomorrow from B'ham and not sure best options.
Train from B'ham doesn't look like a great option for various reasons including cost.

so thinking along lines of driving to Altrincham and train in from there or simply drive all the way.

heading into the centre and need to be there for 8am.

recommendations gratefully received. won't be in landy just the 'run about'

many thanks,

From Altrincham, you could get the Metro better than the train and has a lot more stations see map below.

Unless you know Manchester centre very well then its a nightmare to drive into, if the bus lane cameras don't get you the one-way systems will and then there are the zones, it's a nightmare.

/\ thanks for that Rolling with laughter

moving on, Gilarion.

thanks for the response - far more helpful than some! ( Very Happy ).

you say a lot more stations on the underground (sounds like a bad thing not good ie will take longer ?)

do you think parking will be easy enough at Altrincham?
any idea roughly how long it'll take on the tube / underground?

thank you. Thumbs Up

Cost aside, you can't beat the train. 90 mins and it is rarely delayed much. I do it at least once a week. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

On-street parking is a problem, however, there are long-stay parking available in the car parks in the centre of Altrincham the tram is pretty quick from Altrincham to the city centre and with the benefit that one of the many city centre stops maybe near your destination. Piccadilly train station is a fair walk to the centre of town and if your destination is on the far side of town you would end up getting a tram from Piccadilly anyways.

Do not think of driving into Manchester centre as car park charges usually make you say to yourself WTF.. Laughing

By the way, the Metro is a fast link tramway, not an underground tube system For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

The train pricing is a bit of a scam from memory in that you need to book months in advance to get a decent price and unless you do its $$$$.........

They admitted on BBC News the other day that a turn up and pay train ticket was close to the same price as flying.

You're right, 90 Dreamer, the deals are for people who have the ability to book in advance, and it is especially good if you are going off peak and can specify which train you want to be on. Becomes pricey when you are delayed and need to upgrade the return journey.....

Last time I drove into Manchester for work, I parked on an NCP and almost had to remortgage the house when I returned to the pay machine Laughing

That was probably 5 or 6 years ago. And someone else was paying for the car parking.

I expect other towns and cities are the same now. Norwich only has a couple of multi-storeys under £10 a day.
