Thanks to all for your kindness and sharing of experience. Not sure I’ll be entrusted with a 7 & 6 year old and Land Rover at the same time again for what was supposed to be a fun time. Not seeing the stress of their dad grow!!!

Anyway, on to the next chapter.

Finally, a special mention to Grenadier who PM’d me and has been very kind in his support. Merci Beaucoup.

Next challenge is to work out how to get bikes and camping equipment that filled a 110 back to the UK on the assumption that the car is unlikely to be repaired in France. I hadn’t appreciated that cover is for recovery of people not equipment. Lesson learnt.

I might add that most mechanics in France are on holiday during August. However I am normally round and about in August and my French isn't too bad !

Enjoy the rest of your holiday. The breakdown just adds to the excitement. Sounds like you need a transit to get you home 👍

Maybe the equipment could go back to the UK in the repatriated Defender, with a bit of negotiation most things are possible.

Land Rovers (of the correct shape) are memory makers, given a bit of time your girls will look back on this as quality adventure time with dad.

Bon chance Thumbs Up

Have I missed the diagnosis?

What is the clunk, and can it be fixed? Why is everyone just talking about getting another vehicle. Fix it.

That was my thought too. Has it actually broken down or just making a clunk?

Sadly, driving to find a garage this afternoon resulted in whatever the problem is getting worse. In the end I was unable to come out of gear and just got a metal on metal sound. Car now recovered so hopefully the problem will be solved one way or another. Unfortunately RAC unable to find a hire car.

That was yesterday, no diagnosis likely Sunday and it's August in France so most mechanics are on holiday.

The Shrink is coping with an "interesting" situation, hope it works out well.

What age / type vehicle would help.

Crossed my mind that it could be an early Tdci with the weaker two pin front diff. But it all repairable. It’s only a Defender.

No diagnosis yet. It happened on Saturday afternoon and garage won’t look at it until Monday. Assumption of repatriation is due to it being August and feedback from local expert but of course it could be a simple fix.

Eldest daughter is no longer being sick 🤢 so that is one less thing to worry about.

Thanks all again for advice, words of encouragement and general kindness.

Much appreciated

The car has been taken to another garage near Geneva, as the first garage said they couldn’t repair it, and I am waiting on the diagnosis. RAC European Assistance keep promising me calls with updates but they never materialise.

Thanks for kind wishes and advice - all very much appreciated.

Update.

The garage says the problem was the Transfer Box and have quoted €4,200 to replace.

Any words of wisdom gratefully received.
