Always worth a go. I'd also take it in and out of fixed diff a few times.

Definitely worth a try.
You can drive in low range on any surface. The problem of wind up only occurs when diff lock is engaged - this is when you are best on loose surfaces.

@Iktank Can I ask what overfilling does and what symptoms it exhibits?

Have you tried driving it in low ratio? I'm just wondering if the transfer box may not be quite aligned and causing issues in low gears that are more noticeable than high gears. A bit of a longshot, but maybe worth a check.

Found it was quite hard getting it into low range. Double clutched but had to fight the box for a minute or two to get it feeling like it was in. Then drove around in low 1st and 2nd for a bit, then back to high range. And 2nd gear felt even worse. I will give it another few days and if there's no improvement back to the shop it goes.

Cheers for the suggestion.

Beginning to think that your clutch or slave cylinder might be failing Big Cry It could be a coincidence that the symptoms started after a service - just sod's law.
It is a shame that it isn't something simple.

Yes it's still weird that it happened immediately upon handing it back to me after the service, but there's not much to be said or done or fingers pointed until the problem is identified hey.

I have not mate. 2nd gear still sticks like crazy when the gear box is cold, and then things improve as it warms up. But even then there's still the odd situation where it doesn't want to go in. I've taken to double and triple clutching in those cases, or just applying pressure until it clunks in.

I'm ordering a Shift-R Gear Shifter this month
https://bellautoservices.co.uk/store/puma-...r-shifter/

When I take it to the shop to have them fit it I'll leave the 110 there overnight and let them to take it for a drive first thing in the morning so they can definitely replicate what I'm experiencing. There's no way I can prove that it's something they did during the last service, and as someone said above it might just be sheer coincidence - so if there's something amiss then I'll just have to pay for it to be fixed.

One thing I did ask them to do last time was put a grease nipple into the pedal box and pump in some grease to combat the well-known squeaky clutch pedal issue. Well the squeak is gone but now I'm wondering if there's any way the action of the clutch has been affected in some way.

This is the procedure I'm talking about: https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showt...utch-pedal

I would hazard a guess that the wrong gearbox oil was used. Happened to me with a 200 tdi. Could not change gear after a service. They had put the wrong specification oil in. Your mechanic may have used a good brand name but ask what the specifications on the bottle were. Also check the level of clutch fluid in the little container at the bulk head. It's a pain to open but if it is low on fluid your gear change will be anything but smooth.Going from high range to low range in a PUMA is the easiest of any Land Rover I have ever owned. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Sorry not been on here working away.
Overfilling will cause difficulty in changing gears, even cause overheating as the oil does not have enough space to move around.
Common issue with the gearbox being overfilled, it does not have a level hole just a filling hole so correct amount must be put in - off the cuff I think it is 2.2ltrs.
I had a whining from my box as it was overfilled by LR

The gearbox takes GL4 spec. If GL5 spec was used it will react in a bad way with your gearbox innards. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thanks for the reply. I don't know what they used but this mob is one of the Defender expert shops where I live. They have 6-12 Defenders in their garage at any one time, as well as several series undergoing resto. So I have to assume they know what they're about with the oil. When I first took it back with my complaint, they also changed the oil out as a courtesy, so even if they got it wrong the first time you'd hope they didn't the second. I'll ask them what they put in to be sure.

I'll also be checking the clutch fluid in the morning - appreciate the suggestion.
