Post MY02 rear door maintenance, modifications or upgrades?
Hi all,

I initially posted this on the maintenance and modifications section but surprisingly didn't have a single response from any of our members so figured that perhaps I put it in the wrong place and it may be better in the td5 section.

Keeping with my plan of action to see maintenance as an opportunity to replace / upgrade components a broken door latch and non functional 3rd brake light has meant I've had to strip the rear door.

I've replaced the wiring to the brake light and installed an Nakatanenga LED light from Brendan and ordered a new latch.

I've also sprayed the trim black (along with the other panels) due to showing it's age and have new clips / fasteners on order.

Door is in excellent condition with no rust and no cracks in it but the weight of the large wheel / tyre has always concerned me so am looking to install a swing away wheel carrier whilst the door is in bits.

Would members recommend installing a Nakatanenga door strut or would this be overkill with a swing away wheel carrier as I presume the strut helps with the weight of the wheel where the swing away wheel carrier alleviates this issue?

Are there any other maintenance jobs that you recommend be done or any parts checked before putting it all back together or are there any other upgrades / modifications that members have done which would be worth while doing at this stage?

Thanks

Nick

The post '02 rear door is a pretty well sorted package. The only mod I can think of that would be worth doing whilst it's in bits would be to fit a time delay relay to the rear wiper.

When I rebuilt one for my old 90, I also fitted two large aluminium backing plates to the spare wheel carrier to stiffen up the mounting. If you're fitting a separate carrier though, that won't help you.

I suspect that a separate carrier will also negate the need for a door gas strut. Darren

Thanks Darren, I didn't know if the gas strut would still be needed with the swing away wheel carrier.

I've recently purchased a .99 relay for the front wipers, would the old one from the front work in the rear or do I need a different one?

Is the standard post-2002 door stay different or improved from earlier ones?

I only ask because I had a separate carrier on my door (Tdi) and the door would still swing shut on me. I think I should have fitted a Naka strut years ago. Donald

It is essentially the same design. When I fitted a post '02 door to my '92 90, I was pleasantly surprised that it bolted straight on. Darren

I suppose the wheel carrier will take the weight off the door and make it easier to open and close where the strut will stop it closing on the kids when they're climbing in and out...

Very Happy Well, I think that proves my point!

I had a problem for years with my door closing on me, even with the wheel on a swing- away carrier. If the design is essentially the same, I don't think a carrier alone is guaranteed to make the difference.

For all the cost of the gas strut, I'd say it was definitely worth it. I couldn't believe how much of a difference it made. Donald

Thanks for the feedback donmacn, if it's worth fitting one then it makes sense to do it at this stage whilst everything is apart

Pull the upper section of the window seal back and spray clear waxoyl in between it. My Puma door has began to rust badly from trapped water between seal and doorskin.

I put a Puma door on my 99 MY 110 and it is great. I have a swing away carrier and a Nakatenenga upper door strut. It keeps the door open when needed in off road situations and also helps in closing the door. Also agree on putting rust inhibitor into the upper window seal. Don’t use a petroleum based product as it will swell and mess with the seal but its worth doing Thumbs Up 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Or, if you want to do it with a product that wasn't around in the 1960s and actually works, try here instead:

I’ve just fitted a mantec wheel carrier to mine, a gas strut might assist with opening as there is quite a bit of friction within the mechanism of the mantec. I’m about to swap to a new door though as mine is proper fracked, new glass going in but it doesn’t have the wiring for the brake light so i’ll Try and run cables through the door frame. Will try and reuse the factory light though with an led bulb. 2003 Defender 110 TD5 SW

Thanks Joe, I'll take a look at their website. Is there a particular product that you would recommend?

Paul that's similar to what mine is like although I fitted an actual LED unit rather than just LED bulb.
