2.2 transit engine that's very broken...
A friend's 2.2 transit engine has died and he is seeking some opinions (for his own peace of mind).... What do you guys think of this?

2013 transit, owned since new, full Ford service history. 77k miles. Engine has been mapped. Been serviced two weeks previously.

Motorway.... Reduction in power to start with (with some "clattering") followed by white smoke. He pulled over, and as he pulled to a stop the engine revs increased in a typical run-away style, but he turned off the engine and it stopped immediately.

After a short rest the engine was able to restart, but sounded awful.

Garage plugged it in and codes suggested injector problem with one cylinder and also confirmed the over-revving.

New engine time clearly, but the diagnosing garage claims the turbo is good and no signs of oil or play in it. V8 90...WIP

A single injector that's flowing like a hosepipe will give the symptoms you describe. I'd be tempted to chuck a recon injector in to see if it runs as normal before diagnosing a dead engine.

I would do the same, put a recon injector engine in before going to the hassle of finding a decent replacement engine. Laugh is I would check the electrics 1st on the loom in case there is crap, My mates Vectra started to run odd, and nearly had to do the same thing, until he checked the loom for the injectors and found that there was a bit of corrosion, five mins later and the car was running like a dream. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

White smoke can be caused by over fuelling. I'd also be looking at a injector.

A replacement injector was tried. Engine sounds like a bag of spanners still. I was doubting myself that one injector could cause runAway like over-revving, hence why I asked you guys. But being able to stop it on the key does point to this.

I had suggested the over fuel and revving could have holed or cracked a piston. V8 90...WIP

I'd be dropping the engine oil out and looking for copper or brass looking bits, or just metal in general.
If its proper over revved it could have Censored a main or big end.

I've blown many a race bike over the years and the oil usually gives you a idea 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

I don't know bud but I think the garage is reputable so guess they would have.

My friend is not wanting to take chances or throw good money after bad so he is going for a new engine I believe.

He just wanted peace of mind over the cause. I have told him next time it happens to not put the van into neutral when he stops! V8 90...WIP
